problems with ethernet initialization

Hi,

I've been trying to get the netboot kernel up and running. I don't get
far, however, since the kernel is unable to find any ethernet devices.
The machine has a 3Com 3C900 PCI Ethernet card, and Linux uses the 3c59x
(vortex) driver.

I've tried two configurations of netboot. The first used all of the
ethernet devices listed in linux_ethernet.h. For the second I stripped
it down to just the vortex driver. Neither worked.

I also built the pingreply kernel with just the vortex kernel. It
enthusiastically reported that the driver was initialized, but again, no
ethernet devices found.

Has anybody found joy with a similar setup?

Mike
P.S. Although I've subscribed to the list I'm not sure that I am on it
yet. Please mail or cc me directly.
