Tropical Semirings

 Cet article paraîtra dans les actes de la conference "Idempoten­
cy", organisée par Jeremy Gunawardena à Bristol en octobre  1994.
Il  s'agit  d'un  article de synthèse sur les semi-anneaux tropi­
caux. On y présente en particulier des applications de ces  semi-
anneaux  au  problème  de  Burnside pour les groupes et les semi­
groupes et divers problèmes de décidabilité en théorie  des  lan­
gages.
 This article will appear in the proceedings of the "Idempotency"
conference,  organized by Jeremy Gunawardena in Bristol in  octo­
bre 1994. The aim of this paper is to present the tropical semir­
ings and to survey a few problems relevant to them. Two apparent­
ly  disconnected  applications of the tropical semirings are pre­
sented: the Burnside type problems in group and semigroup  theory
and decidability problems in formal language theory.
