ACTIX SYSTEMS SHIPS PROSTAR VL WINDOWS ACCELERATOR FOR LOCAL BUS

32-Bit Display Accelerator With 24 Bit-True Color Uses Cirrus Logic
Graphics Accelerator Chip To Support 1024 x 768 Non-Interlaced Monitors
And Industry's Highest Refresh Rates

September 8, 1993 -- (SANTA CLARA, CA)--Actix Systems, Inc., a leading
designer and manufacturer of Microsoft Windows accelerators and other
high-end video graphics adapter cards for IBM-compatible PC's, has begun
shipping its ProSTAR VL Series, according to Philip Grasso, Vice President
of sales and marketing.

The ProSTAR VL is the most cost-effective accelerated display solution in
the market, said Grasso. This will join Actix's mid-to high-end line of
Windows Accelerators, based on the S-3 chip. At a price less than Actix's
basic GE32 model for ISA, ProSTAR is a true 32-bit bus design for VESA
Local Bus. The board supports 1024 x 768 non-interlaced resolution and
delivers sharp, stable images to VGA, SVGA, and multisync color monitors,
making it ideal for Windows users with a 14-inch or 1 S-inch monitor. The
ProSTAR VL also supports 16.8 million colors and up to 90 Hz refresh
rate.

Actix maintains its support of higher refresh rates and exceeds worldwide
image quality standards with the ProSTAR VL. Grasso believes supporting
high refresh rates on the newest, multisync monitors will be as important
to many users as the number of colors, size of screen or even BitBlt
rankings. ProSTAR VL supports 90 Hz refresh at 640 x 480 resolution and
800 x 600 resolution in 256 colors.

In addition to high refresh rates, ProSTAR VL displays the full range of
color depths (from 256 to 16.8 million colors) and supports high
resolutions (up to 1280 x 1024), allowing the most exacting graphics work
possible. ProSTAR VL contains a sizable selection of drivers, including
Windows 3. 1, OS/2 2.0 and 2.1, AutoCAD 11 and 12, GEM 3.0 and 3.1,
Ventura Publisher 2.0, WordPerfect, Lotus 123, MS Word, WordStar, and
more.

The Cirrus Logic graphic drawing engine, CL-GD5428, is featured in the
ProSTAR VL design. The CL-GD5428 graphics drawing engine is an enhanced
VGA chip, which accelerates graphics in Windows, CAD and other graphic
environments. This chip enables the improvement of overall graphics
performance, including significant speed improvements over the fastest
standard VGA and 16-bit VRAM-based accelerators. Operations such as
dragging objects with the mouse, text scrolls and re-sizing windows are
significantly improved.

The CL-GD5428 features a 15-, 16-, or 24-bit direct-color palette DAC,
which provides up to 16.8 million colors on-screen at once to display
vivid images. Other significant features include the independent video and
DRAM timing which optimizes performance, and an advanced write buffer
architecture.

The ProSTAR VL,, is designed for the VESA Local Bus at a maximum processor
speed of 66 MHz, with 32-bit data and I/O transfer widths. The adapter
also includes VESA BIOS and feature connector, and D Sub Miniature 15 pin
(VGA standard) video connector. All Actix Windows accelerator boards are
primarily designed to speed up Microsoft Windows, but will also speed up
the on-screen graphics performance of CAD/CAM, illustration software,
desktop publishing and multimedia applications. ProSTAR VL is now shipping
and retails for $179.
