SYBASE ANNOUNCES BUILD MOMENTUM -- NEW OBJECT-ORIENTED, GRAPHICAL TOOL FOR
CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS

Build Momentum is the First Client/Server Tool that Combines a Graphical
Interface with the Team Development Capabilities and Scalability Required
to Run Large Production Applications

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 30, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced Build Momentum, a graphical,
object-oriented (OO) application development environment for client/server
solutions on Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and Motif platforms. Build
Momentum is the first client/server tool to combine graphical productivity
with industrial strength capabilities to run large, production
applications. The product has four key differentiators: advanced
object-oriented architecture, industrial strength, multiplatform support,
and optimization for client/server architecture. Build Momentum is one of
three products in Sybase's Momentum product family, also announced today.

Dr. Robert S. Epstein, Sybase executive vice president, commented, "The
majority of customers today are building client/server applications that
leverage graphical client environments such as Windows or the Macintosh.
As they begin to deploy production client/server applications, they need
tools that are not only good for prototyping but also have the robustness
to support large, complex applications. We designed Build Momentum as a
next generation client/server tool -- the first tool that combines
powerful graphics with production-oriented features to run enterprise-wide
applications."

Build Momentum

The Build Momentum product is based on an advanced object-oriented
architecture. It features a graphical interface for visual programming as
well as its own object-oriented language, Object Momentum, which has a
Visual Basic-like syntax. At the core of Build Momentum is a
multi-threaded kernel, which is the basis for several unique capabilities
including multi-platform support and industrial-strength, high
performance.

* Advanced Object-Oriented Architecture: Build Momentum provides users with
all of the benefits of OO technology, including reusable code and higher
quality applications, but doesn't require users to become experts in OO
techniques. The product allows two modes of operation, standard and
advanced mode. In standard mode, developers use and customize objects
defined by others and employ traditional programming methods. In advanced
mode, programmers have the full range of object-oriented capabilities
available to them and may define new class libraries or even define new
system events. The Build Momentum product's two modes allow customers to
fully leverage the skills of their staff and make a smooth transition into
the world of object-orientation.

According to Sybase, Build Momentum is the first graphical tool that allows
sophisticated developers to redefine the behavior of their application
environment without the need to drop down to a low level programming
language. This is especially important to large customers and Value Added
Resellers (VARs) because they can easily customize the development
environment to suit their unique requirement.

* Industrial Strength: Sybase designed the Build Momentum tool to provide
industrial-strength development capabilities and high performance features
for building and running enterprise-wide applications.

Build Momentum provides an integrated development environment, including
team development and project organization features designed to support the
development of large client/server applications. Team development features
include check in-check out, version control, and shared libraries. Build
Momentum's sophisticated, multi-project organization tools provide
hierarchical viewing, access, and control.

The Build Momentum product provides the scalable high performance to
support end user environments from small work groups to hundreds of users
and enterprise-wide applications. It supports applications running large
numbers of screens and objects with continuing high performance. One of
the product's unique features is self-optimized performance, in which it
monitors the application code that is being used the most, and
automatically compiles it into machine code for optimum performance.
Another advanced capability is the Build Momentum product's unique
multi-threaded architecture which enables multiple windows to process
simultaneously, even in environments which are not inherently
multi-threaded such as Windows 3.1.

* Multi-Platform Graphical User Interface: The Build Momentum product
supports all major graphical platforms including Windows, Windows NT,
Macintosh and Motif platforms. The product utilizes native platform look
and feel, and uses a superset, rather than a "lowest common denominator"
approach. Using Build Momentum, customers can develop applications on one
platform, and automatically deploy to other platforms, without additional
customization or programming.

* Optimized for Client/Server Architecture: Sybase designed the Build
Momentum product to reflect the company's expertise in client/server
computing in which components of the application run on both the server
and the client. Because it is built for this environment, Build Momentum
includes editors for writing both the client and the server components of
an application. In addition, client/server computing requires open
integration with a variety of data sources.

The first release of Build Momentum works with non-SYBASE data such as DB2
and Oracle in two ways: through Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity
(ODBC) application programming interface and through Sybase's Omni SQL
Gateway product. Sybase plans to deliver direct access to Oracle in the
future.

Leveraging Existing Customer Investment

The Build Momentum tool provides customers with an easy migration path from
Sybase's current character-based tool, APT Workbench. Because Build
Momentum supports APT Workbench's 4GL language, APT SQL, the product
automatically supports APT application code.

Availability and Pricing

The Build Momentum product is scheduled to go into beta test on Windows and
Windows NT in 4Q 1993 and begin commercial shipments in 1Q 1994. The
product is expected to be commercially available on Macintosh and Motif
platforms in 2Q 1994.

Pricing for development versions of Build Momentum will range between
$2,000 - $4,000 per development license. Prices will be consistent across
platforms, with price ranges dependant on functionality (for example,
single developer versus team development capabilities).
