NEC USES CIRRUS LOGIC GRAPHICS ACCELERATOR IN TWO NEW PC FAMILIES

FREMONT, Calif. -- Sept. 20, 1993 -- Cirrus Logic, Inc., (NASDAQ: CRUS),
today revealed that its CL-GD5428 True Color VGA GUI Accelerator has been
selected by NEC Technologies, Inc. for the second generation of their
PowerMate 486es and Ready 486es series of personal computers. The
PowerMate 486es series is designed to address the increasing performance
requirements of the general business user. The new models of the Ready
486es series offer cost-effective, highly-featured "plug and work"
solutions for the small and home business markets.

Designed to provide a highly integrated and high performance graphics
solution, the CLGD5428 is gaining widespread OEM acceptance. In addition
to offering the industry's most cost-effective solution, the CL-GD5428
ensures efficient energy use by providing comprehensive power-saving
features that support compliance with the Energy Star and the European
"Nutek" standards, as well as the VESA Display Power Management Signaling
(DPMS) proposal.

"NEC has designed a series of PCs that address the wide variety of user
computing needs," said Douglas J. Bartek, senior vice president and
general manager of Cirrus Logic's User Interface Division. "The CL-GD5428
is the ideal solution for their systems because it provides a winning
combination of high performance, reliability, and compatibility in an
efficient single-chip design."

"NEC continues to use Cirrus Logic's accelerators because they allow us to
meet our customers' requirements for new features and higher graphical
performance at affordable prices," said Denny Lane, NEC's director of
desktop marketing. "We think our customers will appreciate the true-color
capability, fast graphics response, and the roster of optional features of
the new PowerMate 486es and Ready 486es models."

The CL-GD5428 and its accompanying software drivers have been optimized for
use in the Windows 3.1, Windows NT, and OS/2 2.x environments. In
addition, it uses mixed-signal technology to integrate a "true color"
(16.8 million-color) palette DAC, memory- and video-clock synthesizers and
digital VGA controller into a single CMOS integrated circuit. Because of
the high level of integration achieved with the CL-GD5428, components such
as external timers, RAMDACs, and other devices are eliminated,
significantly decreasing the cost of creating a high-performance graphics
subsystem.
