Study Says High Speed Wireless Networks Needed To Ignite Mobile Data
Market

September 7, 1993 - Wilmette, Illinois - The mobile data industry will
grow slowly but steadily from $595 million in 1993 to just under $4
billion by 2002, with growth accelerating well into the 2000s. That is
one of the main conclusions of the recently- released 1993 edition of
Datacomm Research Company's Portable Computers & Wireless
Communications, a comprehensive report on mobile data technologies,
applications, markets, and vendors.

"Mobile data will set new business standards for timely access to people
and information," said Ira Brodsky, President of Datacomm Research
Company. But he cautions that the market will not take-off as quickly as
many expect, "ARDIS, RAM Mobile Data, and Cellular Digital Packet Data
are busily constructing what could be called 'Wireless Telex'
networks--they operate at speeds long ago considered obsolete at the
desktop." Nevertheless, Brodsky is optimistic about long term prospects.
"The Personal Communications revolution has begun. For the first time
in history, ordinary citizens will have cheap, plentiful access to the
radio spectrum for personalized use. High speed, low cost,
microcellular networks will emerge to serve the new generation of
portable computers, PDAs, and personal communicators," Brodsky
concluded.

The 219 page (single-spaced text) report contains in -depth profiles of
over 120 vendors including: McCaw Cellular Communications, ARDIS, RAM
Mobile Data, MTEL (the parent company of SkyTel), Motorola, IBM, Apple
Computer, Ericsson-GE Mobile Communications, AT&T, RadioMail, EO, and
General Magic. An Executive Summary details the current market size and
segmentation, and presents a ten year forecast. There is also a 69 page
overview of the technologies, applications, business opportunities, and
regulatory issues.
