SYBASE PREVIEWS ENTERPRISE MOMENTUM, A MODEL-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK
FOR BUILDING ENTERPRISE CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS

Enterprise Momentum Combines Object-Oriented Technology, Model-Driven
Development, and a Central Repository to Create a Breakthrough Process for
Developing Client/Server Applications

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 30, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today unveiled plans for an object-oriented,
repository-based development environment for building enterprise
client/server applications. Called Enterprise Momentum, the product
provides the first new development process specifically designed for
large, multi-department client/server applications. The product's new
development process, Applications from Models, enables customers to
automatically generate and maintain applications directly from models,
greatly improving design, development and maintenance productivity. Models
are graphical descriptions of business processes, data structures and user
interfaces. They are stored in an integrated repository, ensuring
application consistency and quality across the enterprise.

Enterprise Momentum is one of three products in Sybase's Momentum family,
which was announced today. Sybase expects to deliver Enterprise Momentum
in the second half of 1994.

Dr. Robert S. Epstein, Sybase executive vice president, commented, "Most of
today's applications are developed using traditional procedural
programming -- a development process that has remained relatively
unchanged for 30 years. The reusability features of object-oriented
technology have improved the quality and speed of development without
fundamentally altering the process. Enterprise Momentum introduces a new
process for developing client/server applications that combines and
extends the concepts of model-driven development and object-oriented
technology and applies it specifically to client/server computing. The
result is not only more efficient development and maintenance, but more
effective business applications."

Enterprise Momentum

The Enterprise Momentum environment consists of three product components:

* Enterprise Modeler, an integrated set of modelers that graphically and
declaratively define applications in terms of business processes and
rules, data structures, and graphical user interface (GUI) models.

* Enterprise Meta Server, an open repository that stores models and
synchronizes them with client and server applications.

* Enterprise Application Builders that automatically generate both client
and server applications. Enterprise Application Builders also dynamically
regenerate and distribute application components when a model is changed.

The Enterprise Momentum product will be available on major platforms
including Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and Motif.

Applications From Models

The Enterprise Momentum product's new development approach, Applications
From Models, provides greater development lifecycle efficiency through the
specification, design, development and maintenance phases. It accomplishes
this through three key technological and productivity breakthroughs:

* Enhanced Models: Enterprise Momentum provides models that more closely
reflect an organization's business process. Sybase has enhanced
traditional design constructs as well as providing new models for
representing object-oriented applications. For example, the Enterprise
Momentum process model not only describes the business process, it also
includes error handling and impact analysis. The entity relationship model
defines not only data structure but also computations, constraints and
declarative business rules. And its GUI model not only shows presentation
format, it incorporates event logic and data integrity rules. Because the
models in the Enterprise Momentum environment more completely represent
business processes, they make the design process more collaborative
between business managers and information technology professionals.

* Model-Oriented Client/Server Development: Once the models are created,
customers use the Enterprise Application Builders to automatically
generate client and server applications. Developers can also modify the
generated applications and capture those changes back in the original
models. The ability of the models to capture changes to the applications
ensures consistency, so that future iterations of the generated
applications include those customizations. The Enterprise Momentum product
automates maintenance as well as development: it enables developers to
change and enhance applications through changing a model, rather than
altering application code.

* Object-Oriented Repository: The Enterprise Meta Server is an
object-oriented repository, which is the key to ensuring application
quality and consistency. Designed specifically for client/server
application development, the repository permits reusable application
components to be inherited across both client and server applications.

Open Architecture

Sybase's Enterprise Momentum provides an open architecture that can be
integrated seamlessly with SYBASE tools, third-party CASE tools and
application development products, and heterogeneous data sources.

Sybase's current CASE product, Deft will be migrated into the Enterprise
Modeler component. Build Momentum and Gain Momentum, both products in the
Momentum family, can interface to the Enterprise Meta Server and be
integrated as application builders into the Enterprise Momentum
environment.

The Enterprise Meta Server complies with the CASE Data Integration Format
(CDIF) standard. Sybase is committed to working with leading CASE vendors
to offer customers a range of modeling tools and leverage existing CASE
investments. Today, three CASE companies -- Bachman Information Systems,
Interactive Development Environments (IDE) and LBMS -- announced their
intent to support Enterprise Momentum.

Sybase encourages third-party tool vendors to support the Enterprise
Momentum product. The company will publish the application programming
interface to the Enterprise Meta Server, allowing third-party tools to
interoperate with the repository as application builders.

Finally, applications generated in Enterprise Momentum will access
nonSYBASE data such as Oracle and DB2 through Sybase's interoperability
products, including Omni SQL Gateway and Open Server.
