CHESS FROM THE WORLD CHAMPION KASPAROV'S GAMBIT
Suggested Retail Price $59.95

Chicago, IL, - June 3, 1993--Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) has announced
the release of Kasparov's Gambit. The World's Chess Champion, Garry
Kasparov acts as both the personal coach and the toughest opponent in the
most comprehensive computer chess program ever! Kasparov's Gambit was
co-designed with the World Champion and his expertise was built into the
game.

What sets Kasparov's Gambit apart from worthy competition already on the
market is the program's unique approach to chess tutorial. The
long-standing World Champion worked closely with EA's developers to devise
an intricate system of move-by-move evaluations of the player's strategy.
Mr. Kasparov actually appears on the screen via video, and coaches in
simple, direct language he helped to prepare. His dedication to the
development of the program's tutorial mode accords with his well-known
efforts to bring chess into main-stream culture, and reflects his
deeply-held belief that chess is good for the mind. No matter what level
of play, Garry Kasparov will help improve any chess game with this real
time coaching feature.

The algorithm at the heart of the game is called Socrates II, and is the
strongest ever offered to the public on a PC. Socrates II won the 1993
International Computer Chess Championship and even the most advanced
players will find an extremely challenging opponent at the higher levels.
In addition, the game features numerous styles of play which vary in
aggressiveness, creativity, and focus. These enable the player to
customize the program to suit specific human tendencies and approaches.

Kasparov's Gambit includes all the essential features that computer chess
enthusiasts have come to expect: extensive tutorials, a running game
analysis, 2-D and customized 3-D boards, an extensive 500-volume library
of history's most famous games, a battery of illustrative quizzes,
tournament play, and a rating system. All these features are presented in
photorealistic, Hi-Res Super VGA graphics and startlingly crisp digitized
sound. In all areas, Kasparov's Gambit is truly the most advanced chess
game ever invented for the personal computer.

HEURISTIC SOFTWARE

Heuristic Software is a chess-specific software house, in business for more
than ten years. Recently, Heuristic has been venturing into other areas of
software development attempting to diversify and reach more of the
established PC market. Heuristic's experience is invaluable for several
reasons.

Heuristic Software has two International Masters and one FIDE Master. Julio
Kaplan, the president and founder of Heuristic, was World Junior Champion
in 1967. Chess Master Marc Leski is still active on the International
Chess scene, most recently playing on the team (with former World Champion
Boris Spassky) which won the French League and will go on to compete for
the European Cup. Both International Masters have taught chess to players
of all levels for several years. FIDE Master Craig Barnes held the title
of United States High School Champion and has been with Heuristic since
it's inception. No other Chess software house in the world has even a
remotely comparable staff.

Over the years Heuristic has produced approximately 409 different table-top
machines, running on a variety of chip architectures. Our best table top
machine, the "Renaissance" is universally recognized as the ultimate in
user interfaces for table-top machines. Renaissance incorporates a serial
port, the "Open Systems Architecture" system which allows independent
developers to develop products which interface to Renaissance. It also has
a removable module system which allows perennial updating to the
Renaissance's strong program. Heuristic's products have twice won the
prestigious "Chess Computer of the year" award - given (according to a
poll of the world's top Chess journalists) by the premier Chess Computer
magazine in the world, Germany's "Computer Schach und Spiele".

Heuristic's years of experience in developing Chess for the small-chip
machines gives them ideal expertise for developing the target machines
such as Nintendo Game-Boy. Heuristic will continue developing and
maintaining on e of the strongest computer Chess programs in the world for
the table-top Chess machines which Heuristic has been producing all these
years, and will continue to produce.

Julio Kaplan, president of Heuristic Software Corporation, is an
ex-professional chess Player. He was Junior World Chess Champion from
1967-69, is an International Master, and has achieved an ELO rating of
2485. He has written many books and articles about chess and has taught
chess for many years. Julio holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science
from the University of California at Berkeley where his focus of study was
artificial intelligence. Since 1980 Julio has been working on computer
chess and has been instrumental in the development of all the chess
machines in the Saitek product line. Julio founded Heuristic Software in
1981.

THE MAKING OF KASPAROV'S GAMBIT

The rigorous geometry of chess is perfectly suited to the calculative power
of electronic computers. Indeed, long before personal computers won a
place in modern business and culture, programmers endeavored to formulate
chess-playing algorithms, as much for the progress of computer science as
to challenge accomplished chess players. From the beginning, human chess
masters proved themselves superior to computerized opponents; and even
now, with the mind-boggling advances in microchip technology, the most
powerful main-frame computers fail to beat the greatest chess minds on the
planet. Some say it's only a matter of time, but Garry Kasparov, the
undisputed world chess champion since 1985, begs to differ. No opponent,
whether human or computer, has succeeded in supplanting his authority.

With the advent of personal computers came accessible chess-playing
software, and over the years such chess programs have staked out a private
niche in the retail software industry. Call it science or entertainment,
but computer chess has continued to grow in popularity because of steady
improvements in algorithmic prowess, design innovation, and graphical
brilliance. Electronic Arts, for all its success in the multifarious
genres of software entertainment, has yet to release a chess game; and
there's a reason for that. EA is used to setting standards. EA refused to
enter the fray with less than the best chess software ever developed for
the personal computer. Soon, the world will have its hands on one of
Electronic Arts' most dedicated efforts: Kasparov's Gambit.

Negotiations between Electronic Arts and Kasparov began nearly four years
ago, when Executive Producer Richard Hilleman (now Vice President of
Production) approached the World Champion. Kasparov had already worked
with a successful chess computer company on a line of stand-alone
machines, and Hilleman hoped to interest Kasparov in helping out on a
PC-based design. In his first two meetings with Hilleman, Kasparov made
dear his desire to bring chess into the curriculum of primary schools in
Western Europe and America. Garry emphasized that he wanted much more out
of a PC chess design than a challenging opponent--he wanted to endorse a
bona fide tutorial program so that players of all ages and levels could
improve their skill at their own pace, on their own time, and enjoy
themselves in the process. Underlying all of this remains a responsible
notion that the mental discipline learned from chess-playing increases the
mind's (particularly the young mind's) overall problem-solving abilities.

So, after many months of intensive collaboration and rigorous testing,
Electronic Arts has developed what is sure to be the strongest and most
versatile chess program for the personal computer. Naturally, Kasparov's
Gambit features the very strongest chess playing algorithm possible - the
program engine that won the 1993 International Computer Chess Champion.
The most distinctive feature of Kasparov's Gambit is a dedicated, on-line
tutorial, tailored to meet the demands of players ranging from beginner to
expert. Add to that all the expected features and options, the most vivid
computer graphics, and an effortless menu interface, and you wind up with
a game that surpasses the competition.
