MICRO EXPRESS MICROFLEX-VL/S IS CYRIX 486S LOCAL BUS ENTRY

Santa Ana, CA, August, 1993..A PC, based on the 40-MHz Cyrix Cx486S chip,
with VESA-standard local bus, is now available from Micro Express. Called
the MicroFLEX-VL/S, this PC will also be upgradable to the Pentium. With
4-MB of RAM, a 200-MB fast hard disk drive with VESA caching controller
(1-MB of disk caching), both 5-1/4" and 3-1/2" high-density floppy disk
drives, a VESA-standard local bus video card, an SVGA monitor, 256K of RAM
cache, a math coprocessor, a mouse, DOS 6.0 and Windows 3. 1, this PC is
offered for only $1795.

For an additional $25 each, PFS:Windows Version 2 and PFS:Publisher for
Windows will be bundled with the system.

This PC will, in many cases, outperform PCs based on the 486DX2-66 chip.
Since the 486DX2-66 chip operates internally at 66 MHz, but externally at
only 33 MHz, the true 40MHz Cx486S chip has the advantage of operating
externally at 40 MHz. This means that the VESA local bus components, such
as the video and disk drive controllers operate at 40 MHz instead of at
only 33 MHz in the case of the 486DX2-66. Thus, video-intensive programs,
like Windows or desktop publishing, and disk intensive programs, like
databases, are likely to run faster on this PC that on a 486DX2-66 PC.
Performance is further enhanced by the inclusion of a VESA caching disk
controller with 1-MB of internal RAM (expandable to 16 MB). This
controller also supports the new 2.88-MB floppy disk drives, which are
available as an option with this PC.

Additional performance enhancement results from zero wait-state operation,
and the inclusion of a math coprocessor.

The MicroFLEX-VL/S contains a local bus video card that allows resolutions
up to 1280 x 1024 pixels, with high-color (32,768 colors) at up to 1024 x
768, and true-color (64.8 million colors) at a resolution of 640 x 480.

MicroFLEX-VL/S is housed in a mini-tower case, measuring 7.1"[W] x 14.6"[H]
x 18.25"[D]. The case has provision for three accessible 5-1/4" disk
drives, one accessible 31/2" disk drive, two internal 3-1/2" disk drives
and one internal 5-1/4" disk drive. The proprietary motherboard has eight
expansion slots, including two 32-bit VESA local bus slots, five 16-bit
slots and one 8-bit slot. Up to 32-MB of RAM are supported on the
motherboard.

The excellent AMI BIOS, with password protection and selectable shadowing
of both system and video BIOS, is used and 2K of direct-mapped, write-back
RAM cache is included. The BIOS automatically detects the Cx486S and
enables NO LOCK caching. This feature improves the performance of the
computer when protected-mode applications are used, resulting in much more
efficient RAM caching. A CMOS clock-calendar is included, as are built-in
diagnostics.
