PEN-BASED COMPUTER HAS FORM AND FUNCTION

HUNTSVILLE, AL--With its new MiniWriter, Data Entry Systems. Inc. is
offering a solution that allows handheld pen computers to use an ordinary
writing utensil as a stylus.

With a piece of paper as the input surface, the 3.2 Ib., MiniWriter is
specially targeted toward forms-taking. The paper is a version of an
electronic form and is placed over the computer's 8.5 x 5.5-inch display,
although the entire unit measures 11 x 11.875 x 1.125 inches. Therefore,
users input with a ballpoint pen or pencil, will receive both a hard copy
and an electronic copy.

Users can also choose to use an inkless pen with a laminated form if
generation of original forms is not necessary, said John Coyne, president
and CEO.

The company has also introduced the ScriptWriter XL, an enhanced version of
the company's ScriptWriter ll which works with 8.5 x 11-inch forms. The
11.5 x 17 x 1.2 inches, 3.8-lb., XL has more memory that its ancestor: 1
MB of memory, compared to the ScriptWriter II's 128 KB. Both the
MiniWriter and the XL also have a larger LCD display than the ScriptWriter
ll: eight lines by 40 characters compared to two lines by 40 characters.

Both products use the company's proprietary DOS-compatible pen operating
system with intelligent character recognition of upper-case letters.

Up to 100 different forms can be stored on either device. Utilities are
included for the design of nearly any kind of form, Coyne said. Functions
found on a desktop machine, such as a keyboard and calculating features.
can be included in the form. Other features include signature capture and
an optional bar-code option.

An included utility allows files to be transferred into PC databases. Both
devices have an RS-232 serial port, as well as an option for an internal
modem.

The devices are appropriate for a variety of applications, such as
fire-safety inspection, emergency medical systems, consumer surveys and
sales.

Support for VARs includes toll-free technical support, lead referrals and
co-op advertising.
