SYBASE ANNOUNCES MOMENTUM-- A COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY OF TOOLS FOR ENTERPRISE
CLIENT/SERVER DEVELOPMENT

Object-Oriented Graphical Tools Offer New Capabilities for Different
Classes of Applications and Development Processes

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 30, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced a major new tools initiative
targeted at meeting the complex development requirements for enterprise
client/server applications. Sybase's new tools family, Momentum, consists
of three integrated products: Build Momentum, targeted at graphical front
and back office applications; Gain Momentum, for multimedia information
delivery; and Enterprise Momentum, providing a new development approach
for large, enterprise-wide applications.

All three products provide state-of-the-art, graphical, object-oriented
technology focused on improving development productivity and increasing
the quality of applications. Build Momentum and Enterprise Momentum will
be available on Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and Motif platforms. Gain
Momentum is currently available on Motif and will be available on Windows
NT.

Sybase, widely recognized as a client/server database leader, further
extends its reach into the client/server tools marketplace with this
announcement. Mark B. Hoffman, Sybase president and CEO commented,
"Today's initiative is significant for both Sybase and the industry as a
whole. It is the culmination of a two year investment in tools -- both
through R&D and acquisitions. The resulting tools are the first to combine
a graphical user interface, practical implementation of object-oriented
technology, and the team development facilities required to build large,
complex client/server applications. We expect the Momentum family to
increase our customers' development productivity, and to set new
functionality standards that the industry will strive for."

The Momentum Family

Sybase's Momentum family consists of three products:

* Build Momentum, a new product announced today, is a graphical,
object-oriented application development environment for developing and
deploying applications on Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and Motif
platforms. Build Momentum is an industrial strength tool that combines a
highly visual graphical interface with the strong team development
capabilities and scalability required to run high performance production
applications. Build Momentum is scheduled to go into beta test in 4Q 1993
and begin commercial shipments in 1Q 1994.

* Gain Momentum is the first object-oriented multimedia development
environment that combines the power of an information-rich user interface
with seamless integrated access to relational database management systems
(RDBMS). GainMomentum 2.0, which delivers RDBMS integration, went into
beta test in March and was announced in July 1993. Today, Sybase is
announcing commercial availability of the product.

* Enterprise Momentum is an object-oriented development framework, based on
an active repository, that provides a new development process for building
complex, enterprise-wide applications. Enterprise Momentum consists of the
Enterprise Modeler, the Enterprise Meta Server (repository) and Enterprise
Application Builders. Sybase expects to deliver this product in the second
half of 1994.

The Momentum products are all based on an advanced object-oriented
technology that provides the benefits of enhanced productivity and quality
through application code reusability. In addition, the company offers a
practical implementation to object-orientation that provides an easy
migration path for customers. Developers can achieve the benefits of using
objects without being experts in object-oriented programming techniques
such as inheritance, encapsulation or polymorphism.

A Comprehensive Approach: The Right Product for the Right Project

According to Dr. Robert Epstein, Sybase executive vice president, "Our
customers are telling us that no one tool can do it all. People have
varying requirements based on price, user interface, scalability,
development process and systems management features. We now offer
customers the right product for the right project -- powerful products
optimized to take full advantage of graphical PCs and multimedia
workstations."

Sybase has identified applications for three types of user environments in
enterprise client/server: back office, front office and extended office
applications.

Sybase's current development tool, APT Workbench, is targeted at back
office applications, which are primarily character-based, on-line
transaction processing (OLTP) data entry applications.

The Build Momentum tool is targeted at front office applications,
characterized by graphical, management-oriented, and real-time decision
support applications. The product also benefits customers who are
migrating back office OLTP applications from character terminals to new
graphical platforms.

Gain Momentum is targeted at information delivery in the extended office --
requiring an information-rich user interface to entice "elective" users
within a company (for example, executives) or outside the company (for
example, customers, or trading partners) to interact with the computer
system.

Productivity: The Right Development Process for Enterprise-Wide
Applications

With the Enterprise Momentum environment, Sybase is introducing a new
development process targeted at large-scale, multi-departmental
applications. Stewart Schuster, Sybase vice president of marketing,
commented, "People have been developing applications with procedural code
for the past 30 years. Recently, many users have adopted object-oriented
programming techniques in order to realize the benefits of reusable code.
With Enterprise Momentum, we've combined the benefits of object-oriented
technology with model-driven application generation to create
'model-oriented' development."

Enterprise Momentum is an object-oriented, repository-based environment
that enables a new approach to the development process that Sybase calls
"Application from Models." Application from Models allows users to
automatically generate and maintain applications directly from models,
greatly improving programming and maintenance productivity. The models are
stored in a central repository, ensuring application consistency and
quality across the enterprise.

Open Architecture

Through the Momentum family, Sybase expands its commitment to its Open
Solutions partnerships with independent software vendors. Enterprise
Momentum software is based on an open architecture and will work with
third-party development tools, CASE products and heterogenous databases
and data sources. The company's goal is to allow customers to mix and
match the products they require in a heterogenous, networked environment.

Migration and Integration

Sybase will continue to support APT Workbench and customers will be able to
easily migrate APT applications into Build Momentum. Deft, Sybase's CASE
(computer aided software engineering) product, will be migrated into the
Enterprise Modeler components of the Enterprise Momentum product. Both the
Build Momentum and Gain Momentum tools will work as application builders
in the Enterprise Momentum environment.
