NEC INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION OF READY SERIES PCs FOR SMALL OFFICE AND
HOME OFFICE USERS

Ready 486es Series of New EPA Energy Star-Compliant Systems Provide High
Performance Computing Power at Entry Level PC Prices

(Boxborough, Mass., September 20, 1993)--NEC Technologies, Inc. today
introduced the latest additions to its popular Ready series of personal
computers aimed at the growing number of "SOHO users"--people using
computers in small offices and home offices. Designed to provide advanced
functionality at affordable prices, the Ready 486es systems offer local
bus graphics, which NEC invented in 1991, compliance with the
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program, pre-installed
business applications, ReadyRemote technical support, and NEC's OptiBus
technology.

To meet EPA Energy Star standards, the new Ready 425es, Ready 433es and
Ready 466es systems are designed to consume less energy, resulting in
significant reductions in electricity costs and carbon dioxide emissions.
New Ready 486es systems have integrated power management capabilities,
including a "sleep" feature that powers the PC down to less than 30 watts
after a user-defined period of inactivity.

Easy Upgrades/Installation

With the NEC Ready systems, everything necessary to begin working is
pre-installed, allowing most users to get their system up and running in
less than a half hour after taking it out-of-the box.

To further speed up installation, NEC has pre-installed key small business
software applications onto the Ready systems, including an anti-virus
utility, Windows 3.1 and PFS:WindowWorks 2.0. The Ready 433es and 466es
models also come equipped with 9600-baud FAX modems, online service
memberships with CompuServe and America Online, Delrina WinFax LITE and
the NEC Ready Remote Support Software. To protect the user's investment in
costly hardware, the Ready 486es systems feature a 238-pin zero insertion
force socket that allows easy insertion of an Intel OverDrive chip based
on the Pentium processor core.

"The new Ready systems are the first computers in their category to offer
high performance technologies such as accelerated Local Bus Video and hard
drives as well as Energy Star compliance at such affordable prices,"
explained Denny Lane, director of desktop marketing at NEC Technologies.
"In addition to providing the best graphics performance in its price
category, the Ready 486es systems are also some of the easiest computers
on the market to set-up, making them the ideal choice for small and home
business users."

NEC's Outstanding Graphics Performance:
Local Bus Video and 24-Bit True Color Capability

Local Bus Video technology, which NEC invented in 1991, allows video
signals to pass from the CPU directly to the video controller and then out
to the monitor. The result is fast and smooth video that until now had
been reserved for more expensive PC models. Combined with NEC's Graphics
Accelerator, Local Bus Video provides dramatically improved graphics
performance. The Ready 486es series brings an unprecedented level of video
performance to the home and small office user.

NEC's new OptiBus technology empowers users with the fastest I/O throughput
possible for IDE drives through local bus technology.

To display photo-realistic images, the Ready 486es series support 24-bit
True Color applications in 640 x 480 resolution with 16.8 colors--as many
as the human eye can detect. Meeting the new Level 2 specification for
true Multimedia PC (MPC) compliance, the NEC Ready es systems provide
24-bit True Color quality that few other low cost systems can offer.

Service and Support: NEC's Ready Remote Service

All Ready systems come with a one-year, on-site limited warranty and
unlimited use of a toll-free Ready support telephone hotline. In addition,
all Ready 433es and 466es systems include NEC's ReadyRemote service, a
unique remote assistance program in which NEC support technicians can
solve user's computing problems directly through the modem included in
Ready 433es and 466es systems.

With ReadyRemote, if a user's question can't be answered quickly via a
phone call, the Ready user simply inserts the "Remote Support" disk and
re-starts the system. An NEC Customer Support technician can then dial
into the user's system, view the user's screen, take control of the system
and solve the problem directly.

"Our customers told us that even though they needed to purchase a computer
for their businesses, they were fearful of the complexity of many of the
systems," explained Lane. "With ReadyRemote, we have eliminated that fear
because our customers know that we can fix their problems directly. When
customers hear about the Ready systems' easy installation and Ready
Remote, you can almost hear them sigh with relief."

Additional Hardware Features of the Ready 425es, 433es and 466es

Designed with three ISA expansion slots and three drive bays, all Ready
systems are a wise investment well into the future. All Pentium-upgradable
Ready 486es PCs include a 3.5" 1.44MB diskette drive with an additional
CD-ROM- ready drive bay. All three models come with 4MB of RAM (expandable
to 36MB). The 425es comes with a 170MB hard drive, the 433es comes with a
210MB hard drive and the 466es comes with a 250MB hard drive. In addition,
the 433es and 466es come with a pre-installed 9600 fax/2400 Data Modem.
