McAFEE ASSOCIATES INTRODUCES NETSHIELD 1.5 ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE FOR NETWARE
NETWORKS

Over Twenty Enhancements Dramatically Increase Virus Detection,
Performance, and System Management Capabilities

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. (September 14, 1993) -- McAfee Associates, Inc.
(NASDAQ:MCAF), the world's leading developer and electronic distributor of
anti-virus software for personal computers and networks, today introduced
the next generation of its popular NETShield anti-virus software for
NetWare fileservers. Version 1.5 incorporates over twenty new performance,
virus detection technology, and system management features, further
establishing NETShield as the industry's most effective virus protection
software for enterprise-wide NetWare networks. NETShield 1.5 new detects
2,017 known fileserver viruses, more than any other leading anti-virus NLM
on the market today, as reported by Patricia Hoffman's VSUM virus
information summary survey, published August, 1993.

NETShielf is an advanced, 100% server-based product that incorporates
McAfee Associates' award-winning ViruScan virus detection technology.
NETShield detects all viruses types, including encrypted, memory resident,
multipartite, overwriting, parasitic, polymorphic and stealth viruses.
NETShield uses checksumming, scanning, string scanning, filtering and
fingerprinting techniques to detect known and unknown viruses.

NETSheild complements the security offered by typical workstation
anti-virus software products by providing complete monitoring of all
network services that access or execute server-bases files, including
files that are moved or copied to the server. NETShield monitors all
NetWare commands to ensure complete protection of fileserver data
resources. In addition, NETShield cannot be overridden or aborted by
end-users, even if they have disabled their workstation-based anti-virus
protection.

"Network security is the top concern of LAN managers today," said Bill
Larson, McAfee's president and CEO. "The increasing reliance on servers as
the keeper of mission-critical data has raised awareness of the risk posed
by viruses being distributed across networks. Given this environment, it
is critical that fileservers be protected against all viruses, known and
unknown. NETShield 1.5 meets this challenge by implementing several
first-of-their-kind proprietary virus detection technologies that allow us
to detect more viruses than any other vendor."

NETShield 1.5 incorporates technology breakthroughs that utilize
proprietary algorithms and protection mechanisms to protect against new,
undiscovered viruses. NETShield assigns a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check)
value to all executable files and monitors that value for changes that
would indicate virus infection.

Many NETShield functions have been enhanced to provide broader and faster
scanning capabilities. High performance scanning algorithms have been
implemented to improve scanning speed, especially when scanning large
files. NETShield also allows administrators to increase scanning speed by
specifying the CPU usage priority and by specifying the scannign mode,
such as on-demand, on-file-access, periodic scans.

Enterprise-wide system administration has been improved with the addition
of automatic anti-virus NLM synchronization across the network. This new
feature automatically installs the most recent NETShield version, ensuring
full protection across the network without having to manually update each
server.

System administration capabilities have also been augmented with a
redesigned C-Worthy interface to improve ease of installation and use. New
pick lists have been added to speed selection of installation setup
options. In addition, all current settings are easily viewed from a system
management console screen.

System management features have been augmented to provide network
administrators complete control over their anti-virus security resources.
New configuration reporting and log maintenance facilities have been added
to provide comprehensive reporting capabilities. Logging and console
reporting have been improved to include critical events such as start and
end times of scans, scan cancallations, and records of all virus warnings.
System security has been improved through expanded password protection.

NETShield runs on any NetWare 3.11 fileserver and requires 600 kilobytes of
server RAM. The software is priced at $495 for the first file server and
includes two years of free updates. Site and volume discount licenses are
available. Site license holders of competing anti-virus NLMs can receive a
50% discount by upgrading to NETShield under McAfee's Competitive Upgrade
Program. Readers can download a fully functional version of NETShield for
a five day free trial through the McAfee BBS at (408) 988-4004 (8-N-1),
CompuServe (Go McAfee), America Online (McAfee) or Internet (McAfee.com).
