NEC TECHNOLOGIES, INC. INTRODUCES THE POWERMATE 486es SERIES OF VALUE LINE
PCs

EPA ENERGY STAR-COMPLIANT SYSTEMS BRING HIGH-END FUNCTIONALITY TO
ENTRY-LEVEL PCs

BOXBOROUGH. Mass. September 20, 1993--Acknowleddng the increasing
performance requirements demanded by users of entry-level computer
systems, NEC Technologies, Inc. today introduced the PowerMate 486es
Series, the company's second generation of economical PowerMate PCs for
the general business user.

With the PowerMate 486es Series, NEC has incorporated a roster of advanced
features heretofore unavailable in entry-level PCs, including compliance
with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star initiative,
accelerated local bus video technology, second level cache, and a scalable
architecture.

Designed as the ideal office automation platform for stand-alone and
networked computing environments, the PowerMate 486es Series is comprised
of three models--PowerMate 425es, PowerMate 433es, and PowerMate 466es--
based on the Intel i486SX, i486DX, and i486Dx/2 microprocessors,
respectively. All PowerMate 486es systems support a built-in CD-ROM drive
and ship with 1MB video memory, 4MB RAM (expandable, via SIMMs, to 36MB),
three expansion slots, three device bays, a 1.44MB diskette drive,
pre-installed MS-DOS 6.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1, an NEC keyboard and
mouse, and high capacity IDE hard drive options in an attractive compact
chassis.

"Since we successfully introduced our initial PowerMate Series in late
1992, we've learned that users no longer buy PCs solely on price, but
performance, upgradability, and investment protection are also important
factors in the purchase decision," said Denny Lane, NEC's director of
desktop marketing. "As a result we've integrated many of the features
found in our award-winning Image Series of fast graphics PCs for the
advanced business user into the PowerMate 486es Series. With the addition
of these features, the PowerMate 486es Series provides the best
price/performance available in comparison to other products, namely the
AST Bravo, Compaq ProLinea, Dell Dimension, Hewlett-Packard Vectra, and
IBM ValuePoint."

Outstanding PowerMate Features Provide NEC With An Advantage Over Competing
Products

Continuing the tradition it established when it invented the industry's
first local bus video technology in 1991, NEC has implemented an
accelerated local bus on the entire PowerMate 486es Series, setting a new
precedent in video speed and graphics performance for economical,
entry-level systems. In addition, all PowerMate 486es are fully compliant
with the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star initiative, while
still maintaining a low price.

NEC's objective in developing the PowerMate 486es Series to be Energy
Star-compliant was to eliminate the unnecessary consumption of excess
energy, resulting in significant reductions in electricity costs and
carbon dioxide emissions. To meet this goal, NEC has integrated power
management capabilities into the PowerMate 486es Series, including a
"sleep" feature that powers the PC down to less than 30 watts after a
user-defined period of inactivity.

Additional advances features found in the PowerMate 486es Series include:

o Optional Second Level Cache to reduce access time between CPU and main
memory.

o OptiBus Technology, developed by NEC, empowers users with the fastest
I/O throughput possible for IDE drives.

o ImageSync Technology, also exclusive to NEC, senses when a PowerMate
486es is used with an NEC MultiSync monitor and automatically adjust to
the highest refresh rate possible for clear, flicker-free images.

o Compact Chassis Design allows users to easily expand their systems to
include devices such as internal CD-ROM and tape back-up drives.

o 24-bit True Color displays nearly 16.8 million colors for truly
photo-realistic images.
