IBM AND SHIVA ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT AND OEM AGREEMENT FOR REMOTE NETWORKING

San Francisco, CA, Interop--August 25, 1993--In a move that solidifies
Shiva Corporation's leadership in the remote networking market, company
executives today announced that they have reached an agreement wit IBM
Corporation to jointly develop remote networking technology. The goal of
the Shiva-IBM agreement is to provide products that allow mobile and
remote users of IBM computers to easily access data and communicate with
their corporate offices as if they were on the company network. IBM will
show a technology demonstration of remote networking in their booth
(#1936) at Interop.

The market for remote networking is experiencing rapid growth, driven by
increasing numbers of mobile and remote computer users who want access to
corporate resources. According to Forrester Research (Cambridge, MA), 75%
of Fortune 1000 companies will need to set up remote networking programs
by 1995.

Said Shiva President Dan Schwinn: "This is the most important development
in Shiva's eight-year history. Over the past 12 months, Shiva's sales of
remote networking products have grown 350%. This alliance will help both
IBM and Shiva meet the accelerating demand for remote networking." Shiva
corporation was ranked #25 in the 1992 Inc. 500 listing of the fastest
growing private companies in the U.S.

Said Don Haile, NS Director of Network Access for IBM's Networking Systems
Line of Business: "Like Shiva, we see remote access as an exciting, growth
market. Increasingly, our customers are asking for solutions that provide
remote access to their networks for employees working at home or while
traveling. We are working with Shiva on remote access products that draw
on the strengths of each company."

To meet this growing demand, Shiva and IBM will jointly develop multi-port,
multiprotocol remote networking technology for Token Ring and Ethernet
networks. Support for frame relay technology, along with DOS, Windows and
OS/2 clients, will make the IBM solution compatible with other IBM
networking products. This technology will be designed to meet the needs of
the IBM customer and will address several areas essential to remote
networking:

* Ease of configuration
* Concurrent support for a wide variety of access speeds
* Multi-protocol support over a single link via frame
  relay support (RFC 1294)
* Support for IEEE 802.2 and NetBIOS applications along
with traditional IPX and TCP/IP support

In May 1993, Shiva shipped LanRover/T for NetWare, the first remote
networking server for enterprise-wide, mission-critical Token Ring
networks. Shiva's LanRover/E provides access to Ethernet networks for
NetWare and AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) users. Using Shiva's remote
networking products, computer users can communicate by modem over standard
phone lines to the corporate network, so that employees working at home,
from hotels or in satellite offices can work as if they were still in the
corporate office, using electronic mail, databases and other
computer-based resources.
