BMDP Statistical Software Introduces BMDP/DIAMOND In Licensing Agreement
With IBM

Los Angeles, California - BMDP Statistical Software, Inc., a leader in the
statistical software industry, has announced that they have signed a
licensing agreement with IBM in which BMDP will market and support a
highly interactive graphical visualization tool for exploring
relationships in multivariate data. It was invented and developed by the
Exploratory Visualization Group at the IBM Research Division's Thomas J.
Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York.

BMDP will market the data exploration and visualization package as
BMDP/DIAMOND, and will begin shipping OS/2 and UNIX versions in early
Fall.

BMDP/DIAMOND transforms data and statistics into visually stunning and
meaningful graphics. By viewing and manipulating their data through
BMDP/DIAMOND's graphs and plots, users can rapidly gain insight into
relationships among variables in any dataset. BMDP/DIAMOND provides many
simultaneous data presentations, including a concise global view, various
two-, three-, and four- dimensional plots, and sorted tables of univariate
and bivariate statistics. Among its many plots are three-dimensional
scatterplots, parallel coordinate plots, and parametric snake plots.

All data and graphics windows are dynamically linked. When the user
manipulates information in one window, that information is instantaneously
updated in all related windows. If a color specification of a variable is
altered in one window, the color change is automatically reflected in
other graphics and data windows. In addition, new presentations can be
accessed at any time by combining properties of one or several existing
presentations. Other dynamic data interactions include: transforming,
sorting and subsetting, and defining new variables using a comprehensive
library of over 200 mathematical functions. Color can be used to
interactively delimit arbitrary slices of the data and to perform logical
operations on the data subsets.

Working in a multi-windowing environment, BMDP/DIAMOND's highly interactive
user interface provides for quick and easy analysis. All operations are
based on simple mouse and keystroke functions. For example, online
context-sensitive help for descriptions, explanation, and guidance can be
accessed from every window via a mouse click.

Included in the BMDP/DIAMOND package is the utility ICE, a
multi-dimensional visualization tool. ICE encodes up to 9 data parameters
into glyphs and maps them on a Cartesian (x, y, z axes) cube that is
subdivided into cells of smaller cubes. The mapping of data parameters to
visual dimensions can be changed interactively, providing direct visual
insight into the data.

Together, BMDP/DIAMOND and ICE are powerful tools for applications
involving the interpretation and exploration of data. The package is ideal
for engineering, point-of-sale retail, finance/economics, quality control,
the insurance industry, medicine/pharmacology, or any field requiring the
analysis of unstructured datasets.

On the company's new association with IBM Research, BMDP General Manager
Jennifer Row commented, "This agreement plays to the strengths of both
companies--the research and development talents of the IBM Research Labs
and the statistical computing expertise and customer support organization
of BMDP--with our customers being the winners."

Bernice E. Rogowitz, manager of the Exploratory Visualization Group said,
"We are happy to be working with BMDP to bring DIAMOND's advanced
capabilities to this market."

BMDP/DIAMOND Version 1.0 for UNIX and OS/2 is currently undergoing Beta
testing; final production copies will be available from BMDP early this
Fall. A version for Microsoft Windows is planned. For additional
