Ricoh Announces Pricing and Availability of Dual-Access Laser Fax/Printer
with 14.4 Modem

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (October 5, 1993) -- Ricoh Corporation has announced
the pricing and immediate availability of a multifunctional high-speed
laser facsimile with on-line printer and convenience copier capabilities
The RICOH FAX3500L scans documents to memory in 4 5 seconds-a-page even
while the fax or printer is active The fax unit has a suggested retail
price of $3,655 and the printer interface option, which sells separately,
lists for $695

The FAX3500L is a highly automated plain paper facsimile that offers true
laser recording, memory priority transmission and a high-speed 14.4
kilobytes-per-second (kbps) modem with artificial intelligence (AI)
protocol. An optional computer interface provides 10 page-per-minute (ppm)
on-line printing at 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) from IBM compatible PCs It
offers a variety of popular emulations for compatibility with most
off-the-shelf software

Dual-access increases productivity by allowing the FAX3500L to
simultaneously perform multiple functions for optimal utilization It
enables high-volume corporate users to benefit from cost and time savings
inherent in fast transmission speed, while also providing the benefits of
an additional laser printer

"The large expandable memory capacity of this high-speed fax, combined with
its optional computer printer interface, makes it a practical and
versatile addition to any corporate office," observes John Carlomano,
manager, facsimile product marketing, Ricoh Corporation. "Its dual-access
design provides authentic multitasking, while delivering uncompromising
fax and printer performance. The FAX3500L offers an outstanding set of
document management functions in a single well-designed package."

High-speed Laser Fax

A high-speed modem allows the FAX3500L to transmit documents to other 14.4
kbps facsimiles in just six seconds per letter-size page over regular
phone lines, as well as to communicate effectively with 9.6 kbps machines
Speed is significantly increased by Ricoh's proprietary AI Protocol
feature that cuts total transmission time when communicating with other
Ricoh fax units to further reduce line charges This advanced technology,
which was pioneered by Ricoh, shortens the time required for the fax
"handshake" that preceeds and follows document transmission by as much as
44 percent

The standard 250 sheet letter or legal size paper supply can be expanded to
750 sheets with the addition of an optional paper feed unit (PFU) The
FAX3500L automatically selects between letter, legal, A4, A5 or B4 sizes
to choose the correct paper for incoming faxes Specified Cassette
Selection uses a particular paper supply -- for example, colored stock --
for messages from a preprogrammed destination Automatic reduction permits
incoming legal or A4 size documents to print on letter size paper

The FAX3500L is built around Ricoh's award-winning compact engine using a
seamless organic photoconductor (OPC) belt Its very short, very reliable
paper path provides 6 seconds-per-page print speed (10 ppm) and virtually
jam-free operation. The unit offers a single-consumable design that
requires users to monitor only one cartridge containing both toner and
toner collector, and a long-life OPC belt that is included with the
machine.

Ricoh's proprietary 64-level Selectone halftone process allows the FAX3500L
to intelligently distinguish between text and images when scanning
documents, applying halftone processing to images only Incoming messages
are enhanced by Ricoh's Super Smoothing HQ, another software process that
"smooths" curved characters and thin diagonal lines to give documents the
appearance of being sent at twice the resolution

Convenient operation is provided by storage of 32 one-touch and 100
speed-dial destinations that can be assigned into groups for easy
broadcasting Keystroke programs combine up to 32 complete operations into
a program, reducing input required for frequently-called destinations. A
telephone directory allows users to quickly scroll through speed dials for
destinations, and a redial feature displays the last 10 phone numbers
called The FAX3500L also features automatic dialing of busy numbers as
many as 255 times, according to user preference, and chain dialing, which
combines keystrokes entered at the keypad, such as user ID numbers, with
preprogrammed numbers from the autodialer

A standard 21-page upgradeable memory receives documents to memory even
while the FAX3500L is currently sending, receiving or printing another
message Its send-later feature automatically transmits at a subsequent
time specified by user input. A broadcast feature sends documents to any
of seven groups, with up to 142 locations in a group, without re-scanning.
Substitute reception automatically stores incoming documents if the unit
is disabled

The FAX3500L can be expanded with optional memory to provide features
including batch transmission, which combines all files being sent to a
single locations into one call to reduce phone changes, and reverse order
printing, which eliminates manual collation. It also allows multi-sort
document reception, which prints up to nine copies of incoming messages.

Other features available with expanded memory include Memory Lock, which
receives messages into memory and requires a code to print them
Confidential Reception retains individual messages only and requires a
personal code for retrieval. Fax Forwarding routes inbound faxes from all
or select locations to as many as four destinations and records a local
copy for backup

The FAX3500L accepts documents up to 12" wide in a 50-page automatic
document feeder and scans 10 1 " wide images at a rapid 4 5
seconds-per-pages. Its high-speed modem sends pages in just six seconds in
G3 mode at 14 4 kbps in any of three resolutions, ranging up to 392 by 203
dots per inch Transmission quality is enhanced with CCITT Group 3 ECM
(error correction mode).

Security features include Secure Transmission, a unique feature that
"scrambles" a message for transmission to another Ricoh fax machine.
Restricted Access requires users to enter a four-digit code to send,
allowing up to 30 personal ID codes Secure Polling prevents messages from
being polled by unintended parties Confidential Communication allows
sensitive files to be sent into optional memory and retrieved by a code
Confidential Transmission with code override sends a file into memory with
a unique code that is different from the one programmed into the machine.
Authorized Reception eliminates junk fax by allowing operators to program
the numbers of permitted fax machines.

Additional convenience features include Label insertion, which prints TO
and FROM information on the top of documents, often eliminating the need
for a cover page Receive time printing, which annotates on the original
the time and date that messages are received, is convenient for
time-sensitive applications such as credit application processing.

High-performance Laser Printer

A computer printer interface maximizes the usefulness and value of the
FAX3500L by providing a cost-effective, space saving device that combines
essential document management functions in one convenient unit. Its
dual-access capabilities ensure that the FAX3500L can provide true
multi-functionality that meets the simultaneous demands of a busy office,
while providing consistent laser-quality fax and printer performance

The FAX3500L delivers excellent print quality from IBM or compatible PCs,
at up to 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) resolution It offers emulations that
include HP LaserJet III Plus (PCL 5) and Epson FX.

The printer offers 14 bit-mapped and 13 scalable internal fonts, and
third-party font card may be installed to increase the number of available
fonts. Postscript emulation may be added by plugging in a third-party
emulation card. Standard printer RAM is 1 MB, and is upgradeable to 6 MB
First print-out time is 20 seconds, with subsequent print speed rated at
10 pages-per-minute (ppm).

Connectivity is provided by a RS232C serial port and one Centronics
parallel port at the printer end, allowing up to two PC hosts to be
connected. The fax/printer can intelligently switch and accept data from
either port

The RICOH FAX3500L, together with the FAX2500L, FAX3100L and FAX4500L,
incorporate the same streamline series of Ricoh's "CS-Engine " The
original CS-Engine plain paper facsimiles, the RICOH FAX3200L and
FAX3000L, were acclaimed by Buyers Laboratory and What to Buy for
Business.
