Gupta/Novell Agreement Boosts SQL Development Capabilities of AppWare

Close database relationship expands into tools arena

Dallas, Tex., October 4, 1993 -- Gupta Corporation and Novell today
announced product and marketing agreements to complement the client/server
application development capabilities of AppWare by integrating Gupta tools
and database products with Novell's AppWare environment. The agreement
will provide Novell AppWare developers with a closely-knit family of
products for building and assembling client/server application objects in
the Novell AppWare environment.

The first delivery to result from Gupta's expanded relationship with Novell
will be a Gupta SQLBase single-user engine ALM (AppWare Loadable Module),
which will be embedded free in Novell's AppWare Developer Kits. The
embedded SQLBase engine, limited to a 5MB capacity, can be used for
application deployments, will provide an ideal facility for prototyping
full-fledged SQL applications and will be upgradable for multi-user,
full-capacity functionality at aggressive pricing. Inclusion of the
SQLBase engine within the AppWare Developer Kit also means that AppWare
inherits easy use of Gupta's SQLNetwork routers and gateways to bolster
the new system's SQL access. In return, Novell will grant Gupta rights to
embed AppWare tools in Gupta products.

The second product delivery will be an ALM version of Gupta Quest, Gupta's
powerful client/server tool for end-users. Quest includes query, reporting
and forms capabilities that can be easily used by end-users to develop
simple client/server applications. Each capability will be available as
ALMs which separately or in combination can be used to embed Quest
functionality in any AppWare application.

The third product delivery will be an AppWare version of Gupta's SQLWindows
client/server development system for programmers. This future version of
SQLWindows will enable developers to build ALM versions of SQLWindows
objects and to integrate those objects within the AppWare object assembly
environment - a development model consistent with the general industry
trend of building sophisticated objects for general assembly into
large-scale, client/server applications.

Capping the agreement with Novell, Gupta announced that it will adopt the
AppWare Foundation Layer as its own multi-platform portability vehicle to
deliver UnixWare, Macintosh and OS/2 versions of its market-leading
client/server tools.

"This is a mutually strategic agreement. We believe Novell's AppWare will
emerge as an important environment for developing a class of large
client/server applications from a collection of sophisticated,
high-performance software objects. Gupta's client/server tools, SQL
databases and connectivity products greatly extend AppWare's capabilities
in this area," said Umang P. Gupta, president of Gupta Corporation. "We
intend to make Gupta and its developers the preferred suppliers of objects
to the AppWare environment.

"Clearly, we are moving beyond a simple database relationship with Gupta,"
said John Edwards, executive vice-president of Novell's AppWare Systems
Group. "Now, Gupta's established presence in the tools market will aid
Novell's push into the client side of the business. Added Joe Firmage,
vice-president of AppWare Systems Group at Novell, "Our role is to
establish AppWare as the preferred object development environment for
networked applications built from high-performance objects. Gupta's
deliveries will help make that development model a reality.

Product Availability

Gupta will place its SQLBase ALM into beta test early in the first quarter
of 1994, with release expected by June. Quest ALMs are planned for
shipment during the third quarter of '94. Development has begun on the
AppWare version of SQLWindows and Gupta's use of the AppWare Foundation
Layer to deliver multiplatform portability, with delivery targeted for
early 1995.
The expansion of Gupta's existing relationship with Novell is a direct
result of Gupta's TIE (Tools Integration for the Enterprise) strategy,
announced last month. Supported by an array of five interfaces to Gupta's
open tools, the TIE strategy defines standardized hooks for integrating
Gupta products with new or existing systems. AppWare integration comes on
the heels of announcements by major CASE vendors last month to link their
products with SQLWindows.
