Mendelian Inheritance in Man - CD-ROM Edition

New Orleans. Louisiana-- October 6, 1993. At the 1993 Annual Meeting of The
American Society of Human Genetics, Aries Systems Corporation of North
Andover, Massachusetts, and The Johns Hopkins University Press of
Baltimore, Maryland, today jointly announced the immediate availability of
MIM-CD, the CD-ROM edition of Mendelian Inheritance in Man, by Victor A.
McKusick, M.D.

For 26 years, through ten previous print editions, Mendelian Inheritance in
Man has been the definitive reference work on human genetic traits and
disorders. The first edition of the McKusick Catalog was published in 1966
with 1,487 entries.

In its first issue, MIM-CD contains over 6,300 main entries including
allelic variants and bibliographic references. Where available, references
and abstracts from the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database
have been linked to both the in-text citations and the bibliographies in
MIM-CD. In addition to the phenotype descriptions, the database includes
the list of Molecular Defects in Mendelian Disorders, and the detailed
Gene Maps of the autosomes and the X and Y chromosomes. Extensive linkages
built into the database offer easy, on-screen navigation through the
various sections of MIM-CD.

MIM-CD is searched and browsed with Aries Systems' Knowledge Finder search
software for IBM PC/compatible and Apple Macintosh computers. Knowledge
Finder provides a variety of access tools, including fuzzy logic text
searching and controlled term dictionary access. Fuzzy logic searching
lets the users specify a vernacular, text-word search topic. MIM entries
are retrieved and presented based on how closely they appear to match the
query, in order of likely relevance. Queries can be arbitrarily complex,
yet stated in a simple English form. The fuzzy logic search algorithm
eliminates the need to use arcane Boolean logic. Term Dictionaries allow
searching by entry title, entry reference number, cited author name, class
of inheritance, type of document, and date of last update. Within the text
of a MIM entry, numerous hot-links allow browsing to related material.
Links point to other MIM entries, allelic variants, citations, MEDLINE
records with abstracts, Gene Map entries, and Molecular Defects.

Aries Systems also publishes other CD-ROM medical reference databases of
interest to genetics researchers and counsellors, including the MEDLINE
database from the National Library of Medicine, and CANCERLIT from the
National Cancer Institute. Using its powerful data compression technology,
Aries Systems is able to offer the entire MEDLINE database, from 1966
through the present, on 7 CD-ROM discs. Users of the MIM-CD database can
transition seamlessly to searching of the MEDLINE CD-ROM database using
the Knowledge Finder search software. Knowledge Finder databases can also
be accessed across local area networks.

MIM-CD is updated on a semi-annual basis. Ongoing annual subscriptions are
available at $395 (US) and $445 (International). Network subscriptions are
also available.
