Multi-Tech Adds Remote Node and TCP/IP To MultiModemLAN

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 13, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced today that its
MultiModemLANs will now support Remote Node Server (RNS) and TCP/IP
operation in addition to their dial-in/out datacomm, fax, remote-control,
and asynchronous routing functions. The MultiModemLAN network modems
(model MT1432ECT and MT1432ECT4) attach directly to Novell IPX/SPX LANs by
either their 10BASE2 (Thinnet) or 10BASET (UTP Unshielded Twisted Pair)
Ethernet connectors, and can function as one of three different servers:

* As a Data/Fax Asynchronous Communications Server (ACS) it is used for one
or two modem dial-in/out data communications or send/receive fax
communications from node PCs, and single modem dial-in Remote-Control host
processing. The TCP/IP dual stack capability permits access to other
TCP/IP services and hosts during remote-control operation.

* As a Remote Node Server (RNS) it is used for one or two modem dial in
remote node access.

* As a Fax Server it is used for single modem automatic fax sending and
receiving.

The MultiModemLANs include a 386SX or 486SLC processor and both a CCITT
V.32bis/V.32 (14.4K/9600 bps) data modem and a V.17/Group 3
(14.4K/9600/4800 bps) fax modem. A second modem can be attached to the
MultiModemLAN's external serial port. The MultiModemLANs, with added RNS
and TCP/IP support, will be available for shipment in December of 1993,
and are priced at $1995 (MT1432ECT) and $2199 (MT1432ECT4).

"By adding remote node and TCP/IP functions to our MultiModemLAN, we've
created a very versatile communications system for Novell NetWare LANs,"
states Raghu Sharma, President of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "As a Remote
Node Server, the MultiModemLAN allows a remote user to access all LAN
services just as if that user were connected directly to the LAN. You can
also add a second modem to create a two-modem server. As a one or two
modem Asynchronous Communications Server, the MultiModemLAN can function
seamlessly across bridges and routers in a LAN environment for both data
and fax communications. And, as a dedicated fax server, the MultiModemLAN
can send and receive faxes automatically on behalf of any node PC."

The MultiModemLAN hardware consists of a 386SX or 486SLC-based PC that
comes with 2 megabytes of memory, expandable to 16 meg using standard 4
meg SIMMs, a V.32bis/V.42bis modem with an onboard fax modem, and Ethernet
Network Interface circuitry that supports either a twisted pair (UTP) or
Thinnet interface. It provides a standard RJ11 jack to connect the
internal modem to the phone line, an RJ45 connector for twisted pair
networks, a BNC connector for Thinnet networks, a 9-pin D-style connector
to attach an external modem or DSU to the internal PC, a power switch, and
a DIN jack for power. It also provides connections for a keyboard and VGA
monitor. The MultiModemLAN comes bundled with all necessary software.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, manufacturer's reps, systems integrators, value-added
resellers (VARs) and retailers. Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. can be contacted
