Multi-Tech Announces 486SX and 486DX Single Board Computers

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 5, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a leading
data communications technology company, announced today both 486SX and
486DX Single Board Computer (SBC) additions to its product line. The new
SBCs feature a 33 MHz clock frequency, 4 megabytes of memory expandable to
32 megabytes with standard 4 megabyte SIMMs, and a full complement of I/O
ports and peripheral controllers. The new MT486SX sells for $1495 and the
MT486DX sells for $1595 (U.S.). Both SBCs will be shipping next month.

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "Our new 486-based SBCs add
significant processing power to functions such as remote controlling LAN
applications from remote PCs. When teamed up with our MultiArray2 rack
mount system, up to 8 MT486SX and MT486DX processors can be used as host
PCs for dial-in access. The increased processing power offered by the new
microprocessor in these SBCs means compute-intensive applications can be
done faster. Applications requiring such processing power include
graphics, sorting databases and certain Windows-based applications such as
desktop publishing. These applications typically involve large files, LAN
licensed software or non-client server database."

The new microprocessors use the 486 instruction set compatible with a
32-bit internal/16-bit external data path, and will run DOS, Windows and
UNIX. With a 33 MHz maximum clock frequency it will run up to 4 times
faster than 386SX or 386SL processors. The processor comes equipped with 4
one megabyte SIMMs of memory expandable to 32 megabytes using standard 4
megabyte SIMMs.

The MT486SX and MT486DX Single Board Computers (SBCs) are equipped with two
serial ports, one parallel port, floppy and IDE hard disk controllers, and
a VGA controller providing 800 x 600 pixel density in a 16-color format.
The MT486DX also comes equipped with a math coprocessor used for
applications such as large spreadsheet and CAD/CAM calculations. The SBCs
are designed for use in Multi-Tech's MultiArray2 product line. The
MultiArray2s are ISA segmented backplane units that can be used for a
variety of communications controller applications. A typical application
for a MultiArray2 is as a data/fax communications server on a Novell LAN.
One segment in the array would contain the server controller and multiport
serial cards for attaching modems. The remaining segments would contain
SBCs (e.g. MT486SXs or MT486DXs) which would act as host processors for
remote control applications. MultiArray2s come bundled with MultiExpress
data communications software and MultiExpressFax Server software.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
