NEC UNVEILS NEW MULTISYNC 3V and FGp MONITORS

The New Monitors Are Easier on the Eyes and Electric Bills

(Wood Dale, Ill., October 5, 1993)--In its ongoing commitment to make every
computer's most visual interface a better tool for productivity, NEC
Technologies, Inc. introduces the latest members of the MultiSync family
of color monitors: the new high-performance, professional MultiSync 5FGp
and 6FGp color monitors and the entry-level, value-oriented MultiSync 3V
color monitor.

In addition to improving the viewing experience by introducing NEC's
OptiClear surface, the monitors will feature IPM, NEC's implementation of
power management. The IPM System, or Intelligent Power Manager System, is
incorporated into the circuitry on NEC MultiSync monitors, including the
new MultiSync 5FGp and 6FGp monitors. This new innovation makes the
MultiSync 3V, 4FGe and 5FGe monitors compliant with the Environmental
Protection Agency's Energy Star standard, saving customers up to $162/year
in electric bills when used with an Energy Star-compliant PC and printer,
according to the EPA.

"People who spend hours and hours in front of their monitors seek basic
features and the security of a reputable brand," said Jim Schwabe, vice
president of NEC's Graphics Business Unit. "At NEC, we strive to
understand the needs of computer users and then fulfill those personal
needs through specifically designed features that make sitting in front of
a computer all day more productive."

The MultiSync 5FG and 6FG Monitors For Purer. Richer Images

Designed for graphics professionals and power users, the 17-inch (CRT size)
MultiSync 5FGp and 21-inch (CRT size) 6FGp provide the most comfortable
viewing environment available. Both include NEC's new OptiClear
anti-reflective surface, which is integrated into the manufacturing of the
CRT. The OptiClear surface minimizes glare and provides greater levels of
contrast without sacrificing NEC's renowned brightness and color
saturation.

Similar to the highly specialized coatings applied to the instruments in
airplane cockpits, the MultiSync 5FGp and 6FGp color monitors' OptiClear
surface greatly reduces glare and reflections. Just as cockpit instruments
enable pilots to see the instruments more clearly, the OptiClear surface
reduces eye strain and stress, improving productivity by keeping users'
concentration at peak levels for longer periods of time.

To reach this technological breakthrough, NEC had to find a way to engineer
the CRT without compromising its superior image quality. The OptiClear
surface is applied directly on the monitor's surface, bonding to the
screen to provide a richer, purer image, giving the CRT bonded panel
performance at a fraction of the price.

"People who use their monitors for hours and hours told us that as
important as technology is to their jobs, they wanted a monitor that would
not sacrifice clarity or cause eye strain," explained Schwabe. "We
developed the OptiClear coating in response to those needs and will
continue to find new and breakthrough technologies to improve the way our
products interface with people."

The MultiSync 5FGp and 6FGp offer NEC's IPM System and replace the
MultiSync 5FG and 6FG monitors. The MultiSync 5FGp and 6FGp have the same
technical specifications as the award-winning MultiSync 5FG and 6FG
monitors, including NEC's trend-setting AccuColor Control System which
allow users to adjust on-screen colors to best suit their needs and
preferences. The monitors' FullScan feature takes advantage of the CRT
size by enabling people to expand the image from bezel-to-bezel.

NEC's Advanced Digital Control System automatically sizes and centers each
screen image as graphics modes are changed. The monitor also memorizes
various graphics modes and has the intelligence to store up to 36
different modes. In addition, the Advanced Digital Control System provides
easy adjustment of the size, position and pin cushion of the on-screen
image. Both monitors support resolutions up to 1280 x 1024 at 74 Hz on
PC's and 1152 x 870 (dual-page mode) on Macintosh computers.

The MultiSync 3V--NEC Taps Volume Market With its Value Series

NEC hopes to further capitalize on its recent entrance into the entry-level
and SOHO market (NEC SVGA, June, 1993) by creating the new MultiSync 3V
monitor. The SVGA monitor and MultiSync 3V monitor have similar technical
specifications but different CRT sizes of 14- and 15-inches, respectively.
While the NEC SVGA monitor is a value monitor designed specifically for
the PC, the MultiSync 3V monitor has a larger screen size,
multiple-frequency and multiple-platform capabilities and the
implementation of NEC's IPM System.

With the introduction of the MultiSync 3V monitor, NEC provides a
high-quality 15-inch monitor for an estimated selling price of just $550.
Now, people who want to buy an entry-level system can afford to own the
quality behind the NEC MultiSync brand name.

The 3V monitor is geared toward mainstream consumers who appreciate the
security that comes with an affordable, quality, brand-name product such
as the new MultiSync 3V color monitor. The MultiSync 3V is exactly the
top-of-the-line entry product you would expect from NEC. The 3V offers
multiple-frequency technology, allowing consumers to use the 3V on almost
any computer platform.

The MultiSync 3V incorporates ErgoDesign. The ergonomic design concept
behind the entire MultiSync line is compatible with both Macintosh and PC
platforms and is capable of running 1024 x 768NI on PC and Macintosh
computers.

"With the MultiSync 3V, we wanted to provide an extremely useful monitor
that provides quality and value, while omitting the advanced technologies
used by higher-end users," said Schwabe. "To give new users an option, we
created the MultiSync 3V to provide value and quality at a very affordable
price."

Customers will also be able to buy a MultiSync 3V monitor easily, since it
is immediately available throughout NEC's North American network of
authorized resellers and in the mass merchant arena at such stores as
CompUSA, Best Buy, Computize and London Drug in Canada.

Save Money With Power Management

The MultiSync 5FGp, 6FGp and 3V, as well as the MultiSync 4FGe and 5FGe
monitors, include NEC's Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) System. Saving
average consumers up to $162/year (when used with an Energy Star-compliant
PC and printer) that would normally be spent on electricity, the
Intelligent Power Manager System allows the monitor to automatically power
down to a lower energy-saving level. Because the IPM System reduces power
consumption to approximately 70 percent when not in use, the monitor's IPM
System will result in dramatic cost savings.

NEC's new Energy Star-compliant monitors represent a major endorsement of
our program," said Linda Latham of the EPA's Energy Star program. "By
introducing the new MultiSync monitors, NEC has demonstrated its
commitment to saving energy and protecting the environment."

The MultiSync 3V, 4FGe and 5FGe comply with the Environmental Protection
Agency's new Energy Star standard, which requires that monitors consume
less than 30 watts when in the main power saving mode.

"In addition to being Energy Star-compliant, these products have a
bottom-line impact: they save money," said Schwabe.
In addition to NEC's new Energy Star-compliant monitors, the company offers
Energy Star-compliant systems in the Ready 486es Series and Powermate
486es Series and an Energy Star-compliant printer in the SuperScript 610
GDI/Windows printer.
