NEC INCREASES CD-ROM CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS
WITH NEW 16-BIT AND ENHANCED PARALLEL PORT INTERFACES

(Wood Dale, Ill--October 5, 1993)--NEC Technologies Inc. today announced
the availability of two new 16-bit CD-ROM SCSI interfaces and a new
Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) Interface Kit that transfers data from a
CD-ROM reader to a notebook computer up to five times faster than
traditional Parallel-to-SCSI interfaces.

Enhanced Parallel Port Interface NEC's new EPP interface meets the demands
of notebook users who are increasingly incorporating the power of
multimedia into their mobile computing applications.

Until the development of the EPP Interface Kit, data backlogs were common
as the CD-ROM laser head retrieved information from the disc and
transferred it to a notebook at very slow rates through the
Parallel-to-SCSI adaptor. The slow transfer speed created time delays and
choppy video from a CD. To achieve the performance improvement, NEC
designed the EPP device drivers to emulate the traditional ISA expansion
bus, providing comparable desktop performance on a notebook.

Explains Marc Miller, vice president of NEC's Advanced Media Group, "In the
past, a user could have a high-performance NEC MultiSpin CD-ROM reader on
a notebook and only receive part of the reader's performance benefits due
to limitations in interface technology. With the EPP, NEC has empowered
portable computer users to implement full multimedia presentations in the
field with the power and performance of a PC, while maintaining the
portability of their notebooks."

Users with the EPP interface, a CD-ROM reader like the portable NEC
MultiSpin 3Xp and a notebook computer can now experience the true 450
KB/second data transfer rate NEC pioneered with the MultiSpin family of
CD-ROM readers. In addition, users will notice decreased access times and
smoother motion video.

Compatible with PC DOS 3.0 or higher and OS/2.2, the EPP transfers data up
to 1 MB/sec and can daisy-chain up to seven devices.

16-Bit Interfaces

For power users, NEC also developed 16-bit SCSI interfaces for PC users.
The 16-bit capability of the CD-AT160 (AT version) and the CD-PS003 (PS/2
version) interfaces provide better support for all SCSI devices including
hard disk drives. Users will notice increased speed and overall
performance. PS/2 users will notice even better compatibility with
MultiSpin products.

Pricing and Availability

All three interfaces have a two year limited warranty and will be available
in mid-October through NEC Technologies' network of authorized resellers
at the following estimated selling prices:

                                     US Pricing Canadian
Enhanced Parallel Port Interface $160 $221
CD-AT160 16-Bit Interface 125 173
