Dell Computer announced a recall of 17,000 discontinued 320Li and 325Li
notebook computers. The 386-based PCs have vaulty capacitors on the
motherboards that cause the units to overheat, creating a fire hazard.
Dell will replace the defective part at no cost and asks owners to return
the units as soon as possible. Customers can make arrangements for repairs
by calling 800-847-4171 between 9 am and 7 pm weekdays.

Twenty-four vendors at NetWorld accouned applications that provide
computer-telephone integration for desktop computers linked by Novell
NetWare networks. The applications support a telephony platform being
built by AT&T and Novell that links NetWare servers and PBXs. The platform
and applications will be available early next year.

The subject of a recent alert from the Department of Energy's (DOE) virus
watch group, called Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC), a new
strain of computer virus called Satan Bug is described as particularly
difficult to battle because it is encrypted. Satan Bug can render files
inoperable, change file dates and shut users out of local-area networks by
damaging LAN interface drivers. Satan Bug has been located at multiple
sites.

Commodore has introduced a versatile compact disc machine that can show
movies, run video games and play audio discs. The company has already
launced the CD32 in Europe and introduced it in the United States at a
promotion show recently. The CD32 hooks into television sets, computers
and stereo systems and will list at $599 with the movie option, $399
without it. The company plans to promote the CD32 through infomercials,
special events and direct mail.

According to reports throughout the trades, Corel recently announced an
agreement to purchase the applications Ventura Publisher and Ventura
Database Publisher from Xerox subsidiary Ventura Software of San Diego.
The acquisition should be completed shortly. Supposedly Corel will acquire
all platform and localized versions of Ventura Publisher, Ventura Database
Publisher, and all associated technologies. Corel will also assume full
responsibility for customer service and support, and has announced plans
to continue developing Ventura Publisher 5.0, which promises to be a
significant upgrade.

Scitex, Linotype-Hell, Crosfield, and Dainippon Screen have all signed
letters of intent to work with Kodak on a new Print Photo CD aimed
specifically at the prepress market. The four manufacturers will also
enable their systems to read and display files from all Photo CDs and
share a common format for CMYK files. This means images from the four
companies' high-end scanners can be stored on Photo CD in high-resolution
CMYK format as well as in the standard Photo CD YCC color space.

Behind the 24-clocks-in-one of new Earth Time ($39.95) for Windows is a
database of interesting facts about the cities and sites on its pick-list
of time displays. Within that data are some bizarre trivia items -- like
major cities you can't reach by phone, the most popular language in
