New SCXI Modules Add Low-Cost Isolation and Analog Output to
High-Performance Signal Conditioning System

Terminal Block Gives Users More Accurate Thermocouple Measurements

October 12, 1993 -- Austin, TX - National Instruments announced today two
new modules and a new terminal block for its SCXI signal conditioning
product line. The SCXI-1122 and SCXI-1124 give system developers low-cost
isolation and multiplexing, while the SCXI-1303 terminal block gives users
precise cold-junction compensation measurements when using thermocouples.
The SCXI product line conditions signals external to personal computers
and uses the throughput capabilities of today's plug-in data acquisition
(DAQ) boards to acquire data directly into computer memory.

About the New SCXI Modules

The SCXI-1122 is a 16-channel isolated signal conditioning module for a
wide range of transducers and signal types. By combining a 16-channel
relay multiplexer with a single isolation amplifier, the SCXI-1122 gives
users a low cost/channel ratio and 440 Vrms of working commonmode
isolation. The module is programmable for gains of 0.01 to 2,000 and can
measure voltages as high as 250 Vrms. The SCXI- 1122 also has one current
and one voltage source for transducer excitation. System developers can
also use the current source in four-wiring scanning mode for resistance
measurements, such as thermistors or RTDs. The SCXI-1122 is ideal for
amplification and isolation of millivolt sources, volt sources,
thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, and thermistors. The module is
software-configurable and includes an onboard EEPROM for storing
calibration constants.

The SCXI-1124 is a six-channel isolated digital-to-analog converter (DAC)
module. It includes six independently isolated 12-bit DAC channels, each
of which you can configure for voltage or current output. In voltage mode,
you can configure each output channel for any of the available unipolar or
bipolar ranges. In current mode, each channel outputs a 0 to 20 mA current
and includes an internal loop supply of 15 to 21 V. The module is
software-configurable and includes an onboard EEPROM for storing
calibration constants.

The SCXI-1303 is a high-accuracy isothermal terminal block that gives users
precise cold-junction sensing when using thermocouples. The SCXI-1303 uses
a high-precision thermistor and an aluminum isothermal plate to minimize
temperature gradients across the screw terminals. With this combination,
system developers have a very precise cold-junction reference that is
accurate to 0.5 degrees C, including temperature gradients. It also
includes circuitry for open thermocouple detection.

About SCXI

The SCXI system is a high-performance, multichannel signal conditioning and
data acquisition system. SCXI consists of a chassis that houses signal
conditioning modules for amplifying, multiplexing, and isolating a variety
of signal types. You can use SCXI as a front-end for plug-in DAQ boards or
as a complete, external DAQ system.
