New SCXI Module Moves High-Performance Data Acquisition Out of the PC

Module Combines Data Acquisition and Signal Conditioning in External
Chassis

October 12, 1993 -- Austin, TX - National Instruments announced today a new
multifunction data acquisition and control module for its SCXI product
line. The SCXI-1200 eliminates the need for a PC expansion slot by moving
the data acquisition (DAQ) hardware out of the PC and into the SCXI signal
conditioning chassis. System developers can combine the SCXI-1200 with an
SCXI chassis and up to 11 signal conditioning I/O modules to create a
portable, flexible data acquisition and control system. The SCXI-1200
module is compatible with any PC that has a parallel printer port, making
it an ideal solution for portable or remote data acquisition
applications.

The SCXI-1200 has a 12-bit ADC that can digitize signals from other SCXI
signal conditioning modules or from eight single-ended or four
differential inputs. It features programmable gain of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50,
or 100; a 512-sample first-in first-out (FIFO) ADC buffer; two 12-bit DACs
with voltage outputs; up to 24 lines of transistor-transistor logic
(TTL)-compatible digital I/O; and three user-available 16-bit
counter/timer channels. The SCXI-1200 can sample in a variety of modes,
including externally timed acquisition, external trigger with pre and
post-trigger mode, and interval scanning. With interval scanning, the
SCXI-1200 scans all selected input channels at one rate, then delays a
programmed interval before repeating the scan. The SCXI-1200 is compatible
with the IEEE 1284 Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) standard and handles three
types of ports - standard Centronics (unidirectional), PS/2 bidirectional,
and the fast EPP mode. In EPP mode, data is transferred at rates up to 60
kS/s. The SCXI-1200 is software and pin-compatible with the company's
Lab-PC+ plug-in DAQ board.

The SCXI-1200 is ideal for PC-based data acquisition applications involving
laptop and notebook PCs, or PCs with the available slots filled. When
combined with commercially available parallel port extenders, the
SCXI-1200 is a versatile solution for applications where data must be
acquired long distances from the computer.

Software for the SCXI-1200 includes NI-DAQ, the company's library of DAQ
functions for DOS, Windows, and Windows NT applications. The SCXI-1200 is
compatible with the company's LabVIEW graphical application software for
instrumentation, LabWindows' 9 for DOS, and the new LabWindows/CVI for
Windows automatic code-generating software for ANSI C programmers.

Pricing and Availability

The SCXI-1200 will be available in December for $895, and includes a 2 m
parallel port cable and NI-DAQ for DOS and Windows. For more information,
