SYBASE SHIPS SYSTEM 10 CLIENT/SERVER INTERFACES AND PRECOMPILERS

Company Continues to Deliver on Promise of Products for Enterprise
Client/Server Computing

EMERYVILLE, CA, October 20, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced general availability of three
SYBASE System 10 connectivity products: the Open Client and Open Server
application programming interfaces and the Embedded SQL precompilers. All
three products are part of the modular System 10 product family, created
specifically to meet the needs of enterprise-wide client/server
computing.

"Organizations moving their business-critical operations into an on-line
client/server environment need an integrated set of software to help them
easily develop and integrate their applications into that environment,"
said Stu Schuster, vice president of marketing at Sybase. "The Open Client
and Open Server interfaces and precompilers we're shipping today offer
customers robust application access to data integration in an enterprise
client/server environment across a wide range of client/server hardware,
networking and OS environments."

Open Client/Server Interfaces

Open Client and Open Server Interfaces are the first open application
programming interfaces (APIs) to provide access to any data source, as
well as the ability to invoke heterogeneous applications and services
through a common application programming interface. The Open Server
product is the only server API that enables integration of disparate data
sources, server applications, and application services (i.e real-time data
feeds, messaging services and gateways to heterogeneous data sources). The
Open Client product is a client API used to enable third-party products or
3GL programs to access SQL Server and Open Server software. Open Client
and Open Server have been available since 1989.

What's New

The Open Client 10 and Open Server 10 products have been enhanced to take
advantages of new capabilities in the SQL Server 10 release. In addition,
they have new capabilities to provide higher performance and standards
compliance in their own right.

Performance: Open Client 10 and Open Server 10 have been optimized for
higher network performance. This is accomplished through the ability to
configure data packets to more effectively transfer large amounts of data
such as bulk data and binary large objects for client-to-server and
server-to-server communications. In addition, the Open Client release now
provides a cursor array interface for rapidly transferring multi-row query
results to clients.

Multi-Standard Compliance: The Open Client 10 release now delivers
"standards-transparent" functionality. It provides an architecture that
supports multiple native application programming interfaces such as
Microsoft's ODBC, Sybase's CT-Library and DB-Library and eventually
Borland's IDAPI. With standards-transparency, customers can build
applications writing to any standard they choose. The benefits to
customers include simplified application development, improved portability
and greater interoperability among tools, applications, networks and
servers.

Embedded SOL 10 Precompilers

Sybase is also shipping Embedded SQL 10 precompilers for C, Cobol and Ada.
Embedded SQL 10 precompilers are programming tools used by customers and
third party vendors to write custom applications for SQL Server databases.
Based on ISO/ANSI SQL standards, Embedded SQL precompilers offer a
high-level standard interface that is consistent across multiple
databases, allowing developers to write custom applications that are
easily portable across different relational databases.

Pricing and Availability

Open Client, Open Server and Embedded SQL are all available now. U.S.
pricing varies according to hardware platform and number of users
supported. Price ranges are as follow:
