SYBASE ESTABLISHES SUBSIDIARY IN MEXICO

Mexico is First Subsidiary in Sybase's Expansion Plan in Latin America

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, October 20, 1993--Sybase, Inc., a leading vendor of
client/server-based software products and services for on-line,
enterprise-wide applications, announced the opening of its first Latin
American subsidiary, Sybase de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. The
subsidiary was formed through the acquisition of NYX SA de CV, the former
Sybase distributor in Mexico. The new Sybase subsidiary will sell and
support SYBASE products throughout Mexico.

This acquisition is part of Sybase's aggressive expansion plan in Latin
America. Sybase first entered the Latin American market in 1990, and
currently consists of the Mexican subsidiary, and seven distributors
located in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, ant
Venezuela. Together, they sell ant support SYBASE throughout the Latin
American market.

Dominic Gattuso, vice president, worldwide business operations at Sybase
said, "This acquisition shows Sybase's continued commitment to a global
business strategy. It is Sybase's first subsidiary in Latin America, and
we're pleased with the remarkable successes which we're enjoying in the
Latin American marketplace and around the world."

Sybase De Mexico

Sybase has long recognized that Mexico's rapidly growing market represents
an excellent business opportunity for Sybase, as well as an ideal way of
entering the Latin American marketplace. In August 1990, the company
established distribution in Mexico through NYX SA de CV. The Mexican
distributor became one of Sybase's fastest growing distributors and a key
player in the Mexican relational database management systems (RDBMS)
market.

According to Gattuso, NYX SA de CV's success in the Mexican market made it
the ideal candidate for the first Latin American subsidiary. Gatturo will
head up the new subsidiary over the next few months. His familiarity with
the Mexican market as well as both Sybase and the former distributor NYX
SA de CV will allow him to effectively manage the transition to a Sybase
subsidiary.

Gattuso added, "Acceptance of client/server technology is growing at a
rapid pace in Mexico, and in Latin American in general. While we are
providing SYBASE systems, we're also providing the service and support
necessary to help our customers successfully implement client/server
solutions while preserving long-term investments."

The Mexican subsidiary currently has over 50 customers, among them some of
the largest national and multinational corporations, including Autrey,
Bancomer, Banamex, PEMEX and Telvisa.
