Sybase Software Supports Transaction-Oriented Information Systems for
World's Largest Sporting Event

(The Hague) EMERYVILLE, CA, October 13,1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that it has been selected as the
exclusive database software supplier to the World Cup USA 1994 soccer
championship, the single largest sporting event in the world. World Cup
'94 selected Sybase's client/server relational database, application
development tools and Gain Momentum multimedia tools because they deliver
the leading-edge technology required to support mission-critical
operations of the world's largest sporting event.

World Cup '94 is using Sybase products to build an advanced information
system to manage the soccer matches and supporting operations across nine
US cities. World Cup 94's advanced information system consists of event
management and office management systems running over a global wide-area
network of 17 SYBASE SQL Server databases, and SYBASE applications running
on over 900 client workstations and multimedia electronic kiosks. World
Cup '94 anticipates that more than three million attendees and more than
15,000 journalists will access this system worldwide.

"Our partners for World Cup USA 1994 are three industry giants, and we are
particularly happy that Sybase, the leading database technology provider,
has joined our team as an equipment supplier to secure the success of our
data operations at next year's World Cup," said Juan Jose Vidal, vice
president of technology for World Cup USA. "Our team at EDS determined
what products were needed to build the most technologically advanced World
Cup information network to date, and Sybase products were clearly the
right software choice. This year's network is truly state-of-the-art,
bringing together multimedia information delivery, an enterprise
client/server infrastructure, and global connectivity and access," Vidal
concluded.

"Sybase is a world-class company, and we are pleased to supply our
worldclass technology to World Cup '94. Their selection of our technology
to manage information across a broad, geographically distributed system
reflects Sybase's worldwide leadership in providing the enterprise-wide
client/server solutions businesses require today," said David
Peterschmidt, vice president and general manager of worldwide field
operations for Sybase.

The Technology Team at World Cup '94

In addition to Sybase, World Cup '94 selected EDS, Sun Microsystems and US
Sprint as key technology partners. EDS is responsible for building the
event and office management applications, integrating the other partners'
technologies, and ensuring the overall success of World Cup 94's advanced
information system.

"The World Cup's stated objective for 1994 was to have the most advanced,
technically elegant information system for managing all the operations,
accreditation, security, results and logistics tied to the event," said
Harold Bencic, EDS account manager for World Cup '94. "We selected Sybase
because of its excellent reputation as the leader in client/server
database software. Sybase's broad range of tools has made it easier for
the EDS information technology professionals to build, manage and support
a system of this scale."

The World Cup '94 Information System

World Cup '94 information system consists of Events Management Applications
(EMA), a key component of the World Cup/FIFA Worldwide Network, and Office
Management Applications (OMA). FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football
Association), based in Zurich, Switzerland, is the governing body of the
World Cup.

Multimedia Event Management Applications

The EMA system includes several applications designed to track and manage
the registration of over 1,700 of the world's best athletes; manage
accreditation and badging of over 50,000 participants, as well as manage
logistics and security; and support electronic kiosks that provide
attendees, journalists and participants with historical game information,
player/team profiles, game-by-game statistics, standings and results.

The World Cup '94 EMA system application will use state-of-the-art,
multimedia user interfaces, based on Sybase's Gain Momentum
object-oriented development environment, that provide participants and
attendees with fast, easy access to vast stores of data in a highly
intuitive graphical format.

"World Cup '94 wanted a sophisticated, easy-to-access, graphical way of
presenting information to the thousands of press and officials covering
the games, as well as the billions of people watching them. They also
needed to effectively capture video images of participants to print on the
badges and store in the database," said Bencic of EDS. "Gain Momentum
provided us all the features we needed to support these applications. And
it's a tribute to Gain Momentum that our developers found it very easy to
learn, even though many of them had never worked with multimedia."

EMA applications that leverage Gain's multimedia capabilities include
electronic kiosks, accreditation, security and logistics. The multimedia
features of Gain Momentum allow the accreditation system to input video
imaging along with identification information (name, country, passport
number, etc.) for the 50,000 registered. World Cup '94 participants. The
accreditation system will use the video images to create photo-ID badges.
The security system then uses this data to provide order and access
control to the World Cup Games and to track any accredited people. The
logistics application tracks a range of functions, including
accommodations, medical services, media booking, transportation, personnel
deployment, economic information, project planning and control,
procurement and materials management, volunteers and other personnel.

A key requirement in developing EMA applications was high-volume
performance running across a global network. According to EDS, initial
performance results with SQL Server, Sybase's client/server relational
database, have reconfirmed World Cup '94's selection of Sybase. "For
example, our accreditation application has approximately 10KB of data per
record, including all the relational database table cross links," Bencic
explained. "Because most of the processing is being done on the server in
true client/server fashion, we're getting sub-second response times - even
when we pull data from remote locations thousands of miles away."

Office Management Applications

The OMA system is designed to provide World Cup '94 staff in the United
States and Europe with a suite of applications that provide "any time,
anywhere" access to vital information for managing operations at all
offices and venue sites. OMA applications are being built with Sybase's
character and graphical development tools and are based on SYBASE SQL
Server and Replication Server software products.

SYBASE products used by World Cup '94

World Cup '94 information systems will include a broad range of Sybase's
relational database, application development, and systems management
software products. SQL Server 10 and Replication Server, both part of
Sybase's System 10 family of enterprise client/server products, are the
relational database components. World Cup '94 will utilize SA Companion
and SQL Monitor for systems management. World Cup '94 also will use
several tools from Sybase including APT Workbench, DEFT, SQL Debug, Build
Momentum and Gain Momentum.
