About Howard Harawitz

Howard Harawitz is probably best known on the Internet as the author of the hypertext editors, "HTML Assistant" and "HTML Assistant Pro".

Currently residing in Canada, in a suburb of Halifax, Nova Scotia, he has also lived in Brooklyn, New York and Berkeley, California, with a few other stops on the way.

He is the proprietor of "Brooklyn North Software Works", a software development and consulting firm specializing in Windows programming and data base design. He also teaches Computer Technology at the Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax.

Background

Howard's experience with computers began in the 1970s when he programmed CDC mainframes at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory while working on an air quality modelling project sponsored by the (US) National Science Foundation.

He worked at the first "Byte Shop" in Hayward and, later, at the Albany (California) "Computerland" store.

While working for a consultant to some of the US's major toy companies, he was a participant in the design and development of some of the early stand-alone computerized games.

He went on to spend several years writing software for microprocessor based industrial controls, medical equipment and energy management systems.

A continuing interest in the application of computers to the arts, led him, in 1979, to develop and market a textile design program for the Apple II, called "Video Loom". Together with a textile designer, and using his software, Howard taught a course in computer aided textile design -- one of the first of its kind -- at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

His education includes a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and an MA in History.

When time permits, he plays and composes electronic music (he owns an original Minimoog synthesizer) .
