Subject:

I have a long-running problem with an HP DeskJet 870cxi connected via a
cable switcher to a 7300 and 7200, both running OS8. There is a PC attached
to the parallel port on the printer. Printer driver for both platforms is
release 9.4. Although the print is OK, and the dual connection allows me to
hook the printer up to a PC as well, the Mac printing has always taken a
long time - with or without the PC attached - and can cause system hangs.
The problems seem particularly pronounced when printing from Freehand
(v5.5 -8). Virtual memory is on at default settings, 64mb of ram. Only HP
drivers are loaded and these can hog anything up to 40mb while printing,
even with relatively simple files.

Now, I've heard that Freehand can cause problems because it converts files
to Postscript, and obviously there's not much point with a DeskJet, but if
there are any workarounds or settings that would help the situation, I'd be
grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

Incidentally, although the Mac/PC combo has worked well in the past,
upgrading to driver 9.4 seems to have created a conflict. Previously the
Macs would not notice that there was a PC connected to the printer, but the
Windoze 9.4 has added a toolbox for aligning and cleaning cartridges, which
is didn't have before. Now, the Macs report the serial port already open
after the PC has accessed the printer. Problem can be solved by switching
the printer off and on again but I've gone back to the Win98 version of the
driver which doesn't have the toolbox and quits printing cleanly.

Dear Digest Readers:

This is the very problem I alluded to a couple digests ago about
Norton not being trustworthy with MacOS 8.1 or above. Please
folks, if you need to repair your hard drive, backup your data
frequently, and use Disk First Aid. If Disk First Aid doesn't work,
reformat the hard drive. That is the only safe way to go about this
with MacOS 8.1 or above. You ask for proof that Norton can cause
problems, look at this post above. These disk extent tree errors
are the very errors I got with Norton Disk Doctor which were followed
by a Type 41 error and a reboot where there was no hard disk visible.
Whatever you do, don't get Norton Disk Doctor to repair your Mac,
unless you have MacOS 8.0 or earlier. Norton Utilities is not to be
trusted.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

------------------------------------------------

I recently bought DiskWarrior (an internet download from www.alsoft.com,
$69.95 and worth every cent!) and having used it on 3 different machines,
I'm speechless! It is, without a doubt, the single best repair utility
available for the Mac. It is simple to use, incredibly fast, stable and
amazingly effective. All the machines I've run it on are much faster and
more stable.

I ran it on an iMac (HFS Plus) with system 8.5.1, which already had a copy
of Norton 4.0.3. Every time Norton was run it found a disk error that it
was unable to cure. After using DiskWarrior I ran Norton again and,
surprise surprise, no problems found.

DiskWarrior specialises in one function, but it happens to be the main
function that Mac users require for a quiet life i.e. instead of patching
the original disk directory like other utilities (an approach that can
often cause more problems than it cures), it quickly builds a new
replacement directory using data recovered from the original directory.
Normally, you would have to reinitialize your disk to achieve the same end.

When Norton finds major problems that require starting from another volume
(i.e. cd) to fix, they are always disk errors of some description. By
running DiskWarrior on a regular basis you can keep your hard drive in rude
health!

Martin

Subject: [A] AppleTalk (LocalTalk) solution for iMac?!

Gib,

I bought a Kinetics/Shiva/Intel/whatever Fastpath 4 to bridge my home
ethernet and Localtalk. I picked it up for $5.00 on eBay. Downloaded
the software from Shiva's web site and away we go.

There are software only solutions available like Apple's Localtalk Bridge
program. Localtalk Bridge was a for sale kinda program and I think it
has been discontinued. The freebie Laserwrite Bridge program won't help
since you want to access devices other than Laserwriters.

I think I rememeber some other software only "bridges" but I don't have
any info on them.

Hope this helps.

Here is something that I got some time ago from Info-Mac or TIDBits:

"Start Eudora, set it up for Bob's account. Quit Eudora.

Rename the Eudora Folder in your System Folder to "Eudora Folder- Bob".

Start Eudora again, configure it for Sue's account. Quit Eudora.

Rename the newly-created Eudora Folder to "Eudora Folder - Sue"

Within each of these folders, you'll find a "Eudora Settings" file. Make
aliases to both Bob and Sue's Eudora Settings files, rename them "Bob's
Mail" and "Sue's Mail", and put them wherever you want them. Double-click
the one you want to use. In fact, if you start Eudora by double-clicking
on Bob's Mail, and then want to read Sue's, you can just go to the Finder
and double-click the Sue's Mail alias. You don't even have to quit Eudora.

My wife and I separate our two Eudora configurations on the one Mac this
way, and it works perfectly."

I have been using this technique with my husband. We each have our
mailboxes, settings, etc. We even have different background colors so
that we know which account is open (see Settings - Fonts & Display).
We keep each alias on the desktop so that it is very easy to switch
from one to the other.

Hope this helps,
Florence

1) I'm in the UK, as my address suggests.
2) Straight from page 6.9 of the handbook that comes with the 6150e that I
have: "How to send notes via the infrared link to another Nokia 6150e.
Before you start any of hte IR procedures make sure teh recipient has
activated his IR link and there are no obstructions between the infrared
ports on both phones. Optimum distance between ports is one meter [sic]."
And then quick instructions of how to do it. Menu option 9 gives
"Infrared reception activated".

On page 6.10: "You can ause your IR link to send or receive data from
another 6150e phone. When using the IR link to your PC, only printers and
PCs with compatible IR links can be used and must have the appropriate
software... Due to differences in PC hardware and the way teh Nokia
software interacts with the IR drivers directly, there are a number of PCs
on which the Nokia 6150e IR comms will not function. Orange [that's the
service provider] does not guarantee that this product will allow IR
functionality with any particular PC."

Clearly the capability is there. European readers may care to investigate
further.

Eudora Pro can be set up for two accounts. Go to settings from the Special
menu. Then Personality Extras, Note one account is dominant, add the other
account.
When asking for mail, hold down option key and select file from the menu to
Check mail Specialty, then hold down command to deselect name, then wait
for mail.

Subject: Boot, but can't reboot

I recently replaced a dying Micropolis drive in my 8500 with a Quantum
Fireball. I now have three drives on the internal bus (2 are Fireballs, both
2GB), and one external.

Since installing the new drive, I can no longer reboot the machine. If I try
to restart, the machine hangs with a gray screen showing the cursor arrow.
Sometimes the cursor is active, sometime not, but it never goes on to a
happy mac (or to anything else).

If I power down, the machine boots fine.

The jumpers all seem to be right, and all the drives show up correctly. The
original fireball is at the end of the SCSI chain, and is terminated. None
of the other devices are terminated (on the internal chain -- the last
device on the external bus is, of course).

Any ideas on what is happening?

Joliet also does not work when the CD is read on a Mac. You'll see=20

Could you let me know as well? Is this software able to produce=20
hybrid CDs with a partition for each OS, as you can do with Toast?

What is the secret to produce "mixed/hybrid" CDs - say, with an=20
installer for an application in Mac and in Windows (16 or 32 Bit),=20
and files which are used by that applications? I think it would be=20
wise to have only 1 set of those files.

At present I don't have a CD writer, but I might get one in short time.

I like the one that comes with AppleWorks. If you have that, you're
set. Otherwise, I found a demo version of a data base on line the
other day. It is called "Ambry". You can find it at

You can do this very easily, by selecting the "Filters" item in the
"Window" menu. This will let you create a filter that takes any piece of
email that has your wife's address in the "To" line, and transfers it to a
different mailbox.

However, I think a better solution would be to forget about using
personalities and filters altogether, and give your wife her own Eudora
Folder. That way, each of you can configure Eudora to process your mail
in whatever way you prefer, completely independently of each other. For
details about how to create and use multiple Eudora Folders, see the
Eudora manual.
