Knit is a new component definition and linking language which can be used with C and assembly code. Knit can be used for any C program, but is especially well suited for use in systems that have some of the following characteristics: Many separate components, multiple implementations of the same component, intricate initialization requirements, complex component interdependencies, low-level code and embedded systems, or code that is used in radically different configurations. As described in our OSDI 2000 paper, we have already used Knit with the Utah OSKit (a kit of OS components which has all these properties) and with a suite of network router components based on MIT's "Click." Knit is part of an ongoing R&D effort. One challenge is to balance precision and conciseness of expression. Background: I am currently investigating ways for statically reconfiguring our Fiasco microkernel, which is written in C++. We have an SMP version of Fiasco which implements a number of interfaces differently from the single-CPU version, and I would like the two implementations to live in the same source tree under different names. Also, I would like to be able to substitute modules for logging versions or debugging stubs. One option would be to use something like Knit to connect module interfaces and implementations. A lot depends on what you mean by "works". C++ is a big language with lots of features like classes, inheritance, exceptions, constructors, etc. which you _might_ want to take special account of in a component system. I think it would be a lot of work to handle all of C++'s features well. On the other hand, Knit's primary mode of operation is to just rename symbols in .o files. It would probably be fairly straightforward to add g++ name mangling rules to Knit and it seems like it would be easy to adapt Knit's initialization ordering code too (though the initialization dependencies would be more complex in the presence of virtual functions). (Knit's secondary mode of operation acts directly on the preprocessed C code to implement cross-module inlining. In principle it would be easy to adapt this to C++ code but the sheer size of the C++ grammar makes this a very large, error-prone task.
