You can use either one of two techniques to get a version of Kaffe OpenVM that boots on the OSKit 0.96. The more reliable method is the first one, since it is a known working version. The second method applies the OSKit patches to the the daily snapshot from Transvirtual, which may have changed enough to break things since this patch file was produced on Dec 18 1998. 1. oskit-patches - Small patches for the OSKit 0.96 for Kaffe kaffe.tar.gz (2MB) - Kaffe daily snapshot of Dec 18 1998, with the addition of OSKit support from Utah. First apply the patches in the file oskit-patches to your oskit source tree. (We haven't applied this as part of the release just to be safe, but we don't think it will hurt anything.) Reconfigure, rebuild and reinstall your oskit. Then unpack the kaffe.tar.gz file and follow the directions in the README here (same as config/i386/oskit/README). 2. oskit-patches kaffe-patches.tar.gz (18K) Daily snapshot of kaffe OpenVM, base version 1.0 Beta 3 Alternately, you can apply the patches here to the daily snapshot of Kaffe from Transvirtual. Upside: includes new Kaffe stuff since Dec 18. Downside: those changes might be incompatible with our oskit patches. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note this restriction: currently the only display support for Kaffe/OSKit kernels is to use the OSKit's xclient support to display on another machine running an X server. Note this feature: one thing the OSKit allows you to do is to configure things so you can run Kaffe/OSKit kernels as a Unix process and debug them with GDB. Of course you can debug the real kernel with remote GDB over a serial line, but the former method still has advantages. Finally, our changes to Kaffe will be going into the base system at Transvirtual very soon, and will show up in their next Beta release. So the OSKit will be supported as a Kaffe platform.
